Fishing Report 11/19/2015

Inshore:

The King Mackerel bite has been back “On” once anglers found the location of the fish. Seems like most of the fish have moved from the North West Places and are now at the Triple Nickle and Big 10 Little 10. This past weekend and first of the week the King Fishing was just about as good as you’re going to see.   Lots of fish in the 25lb to 30lb class range.  I would think after these storms get out of here and the winds go north tomorrow, you still should be able to catch them. Last weekend we saw some of the largest fish that have been caught all year in the Cape Lookout Shootout King Fish Championship with lots of 40’s, a few 50’s, and one that was close to 70lbs. A few of those larger fish were caught around our area, but most were caught north of Hatteras.

Flounder fishing has picked back up. A slow bite last week, but Tim from the shop went out yesterday and had a great time. He ended up with 8 keepers with the largest weighing near 7lbs. Still most of the action is coming from the Port Wall area. If you hit the right area you should have no problem getting a few for the dinner table. Live Minnows and Spro Bucktails tipped with 4” Berkley Gulp White Shrimp have been working the best.

Sea Mullets have arrived in good numbers as anxious anglers have been waiting on them for the last few weeks. Most of the action has been around the #8 buoy out to the #10 buoy in the shipping channel.  We’ve seen some great catches of nice fish from these two bouys.  Sam Gitters Spec-Rigs tipped with Bait Shrimp and Fish Bites have been getting the job done.  Last weekend we saw good numbers of spots being caught in the turning basin area. But I have a feeling with the mullets showing up, we are on the tail end of the spots being around to catch.

Albacore fishing this week has been great.  If you can catch the shrimp trawlers working the beach you will have no problem catching fish. Last weekend there were all you wanted to catch. When the trawlers are not out working, just look for the birds and that will be a good sign of some fish.

Still plenty of Gray Trout around to be caught, Tim did some tagging this week and caught over a 100 in 3 hours at the AB Bridge at night. Don’t forget to check out the Rail Road Tracks during the day. Jigging Stingsilvers seems to be working the best.  Along with the Grays we are seeing good numbers of Speckled Trout. There’ve been lots of small fish around this fall, but we are seeing some fish in the 3 to 5lbs range, just not any numbers. Haystacks area still seems to be the place to catch the most fish, and if you work at it, you can get a limit pretty easy. Core Creek area has produced some nicer fish over the last week with the fish starting to move down. We are still waiting for some good numbers of fish to show up at the Cape Lookout Rock Jetty, I just think it has been too warm so far this fall for the fish to really get on the rocks. From what we’ve weighed in at the shop, it seems the larger fish have been caught on Live Shrimp and Live Mud Minnows.  I know last week when we had that cold snap it really fired off the bite in the creeks, so this weekend with another cold front moving through it should turn them back on again. We have a good stock of Live Shrimp in the tanks ready for action once the weather clears up tomorrow.

YES, the Blue Fin Tuna have shown up just off the beach again. Over the last few days there have been 5 or so killed and brought to the market.  I have a feeling once this weather moves out the boats will be out looking. We have plenty of Blue Water Candy Jags, Floro, Swivels, Hooks and pretty Select and Horse Ballyhoo ready to go for this Blue Fin season.

Piers / Surf:

The piers have been seeing good action with the Albacore with guys plugging off the end.  Still some Blue fish in the mix also. A few of the Surf anglers have also been hanging into some Albacore when they come right along the beach feeding on the Glass Minnows. We’re starting to see good numbers of Sea Mullets off the Piers in the last week on Bait Shrimp off the bottom. Good numbers of Blowfish are starting to move along the beaches now that the weather is cooling down.  Red Drum, Black Drum, Speckled Trout and Flounder are also still being caught. There’s not any huge numbers of any one thing, just a good mix of fish when the weather is nice. The Radio Island beach has been producing a few Speckled trout this week, most of the action seems to be right a dark. Also the anglers fishing along the Surf Zone still are picking up some fish.

Offshore:

There are still some Wahoo out there to catch around the Rise to Swansboro Hole. There just haven’t been many boats fishing for them this week with most of the guys getting ready for the Bluefin to show up.  We’ve been seeing really good numbers of Blackfin Tuna around the Northwest Places out to Big 10 / Little 10.  Bottom fishing has started to pick up with good numbers of Sea Bass, Trigger Fish, Grouper and Snappers. The best action seems to be out in the 35 mile range, but it won’t be long and the Bass will start to move in toward the Northwest Places as the water starts to get colder.
