Fishing Report 12/08/2010

There has not been much fishing going on this week with temps not even getting out of the 40’s. It's looking good for Friday and Saturaday with temps in the mid 50's with light winds.  Well the “Live Shrimp Season” is over now. Our water temps in the store bait tanks are at 40-degrees and this morning there was skim ice on the channel out back. Live Shrimp can live down to 45-degree water temps, after that they start to die. We do have a good STOCK OF LIVE MUD MINNOWS. That’s what the Speckled Trout will feed on through the winter. Fish them the same way you fish the live shrimp, they will work just as good.

The bite out at the Cape Lookout Jetty was good last weekend with lots of 24inch Redfish, Speckled Trout and Gray Trout. Some customers came by with some keeper trout not huge ones but nice keepers that came from the jetty. I talked to some customers reporting that they caught Redfish until they were tired of catching them. Gulp New Penny Shrimp and White Mullet Gulp was working good along with live Mud Minnows. Still loads of Speckled Trout at Radio Island Rock Jetty, guys fishing from shore this week have been catching all they want, using Gulp, Gotcha-Grubs and Z-Man Grubs.

There is some great Sea Bass fishing over on the East Side wrecks. We had some Sea Bass for dinner on Monday night that a customer dropped off that he caught on Saturday and they were very tasty. Squid fished on the bottom will get you all the Sea Bass action you want. Also, using a Spro Bucktail tipped with 4” Gulp baits will get the job done. A few Triggerfish will be mixed in also as you bottom fish. I have heard of a few Tautog that have been caught at the Fort Macon rocks along with action on the port wall. They are a great eating fish but you only really see them in the winter around here. Just fish bait shrimp on a bottom rig for them with a small hook.

LIVE MUD MINNOWS THROUGH THE WINTER FOR SPECKLED TROUT FISHING.
