Fishing Report 12/10/2015

Wow, what beautiful weather we've been having this week, 60’s earlier this week; now the 70’s going into the weekend with light winds. I don’t know if it could get any better for December's weather plus we're seeing some decent fish action to go along with the perfect weather.

Inshore / Nearshore:

Sea Mullet action has been great this week with some of the largest mullets we've seen in our area for years. Anglers aren't having any problem catching 13 to 15″ fish and quite a few of them at that. The fish have moved from the Turning Basin back toward the inlet in the Shipping Channel just outside the inlet. Also, anglers are seeing good action down the beach around the Dead Tree Hole area. Spec-Rigs tipped with bait shrimp and fishbites is working very well to get fish in the boat. Also, the bottom anglers are catching very nice Hog Fish in the Turning Basin area back toward the inlet, plus good numbers of Puffers along the beaches are being caught.

Mid December and we're still seeing great action on the Albacore, most of the action has been from the inlet up toward the Cape area. Some have even been caught inside the inlet over the last few days.

Speckled Trout action still remains decent in the area, with fish still at the same locations, Haystacks, Middle Marsh, Harker’s Island, Radio Island and the Cape Lookout Rock Jetty. There's lots of small trout but anglers that are fishing and working for them are having no problem catching some Specks for the dinner table. We've weighed a few fish from the Neuse River area this week so, that’s a good sign. We haven't seen much action from the river this season so far. So, with the warm weather we're having I really don’t think we have even seen the trout bite even start.

There's plenty of Gray Trout in the inlet back toward the Turning Basin and some nice fish is being caught up at the Cape off the end of the Rock Jetty. Along with the warm weather, we still have Live Shrimp in the tanks ready for this weekend's perfect weather along with plenty of Live Mud Minnows.

There's been some good Black Drum and Red Drum caught in the last week, most of the action seems to be coming off docks with anglers fishing Live Shrimp on a float. Last weekend, I did hear of some decent Redfish being caught in the Core Creek area so, maybe with the water getting into the 50’s the fish have started to school up and feed. Because up to now, we haven't seen all that great of action on the Drums this year.

We haven't weighed any Flounder this week, but I have a feeling with the good weather some will be caught at the reefs in the next few days. A few weeks ago when we had a good weather window, I know good numbers of fish were caught at the reefs and not much has changed so, it might be worth while trying if you want to look for some late season Flounder action.

Bluefin Tuna action still remains steady with an average of 3 to 5 fish a day coming to the docks to be shipped off. Most of the action has been fairly close in from the Sea Buoy out up toward the Cape Lookout area.

Piers / Surf:

The Oceanana Pier is closed for the season but the Bouge Inlet Pier will be open until Sunday, they're reporting pretty good action on the Sea Mullets, Puffer Fish, Gray Trout and Speckled Trout. Fishbites is working great on most of the bottom feeders and Live Shrimp for the trout.

I'm still hearing of some good Speckled Trout catches around the Oceanana Pier area from the beach but it's been hit or miss and Radio Island beach has been good an hour before dark and right after dark.

Offshore:

Not many anglers are going too far out looking for anything else than the Bluefin Tunas, but we're starting to sell some Medium Ballyhoo so, that means one thing; anglers are going to be fishing for Wahoo and Black Fin Tuna over the next few days.

Also, anglers are gearing up for some bottom fishing action over the next few days you should be able to find some Sea Bass action out around the North West Places and the further you go out from there you'll start to run into Grouper, Snappers and Trigger Fish. Over on the East Side say the Atlas Tanker area, this time of year it usually holds some good bottom fish.
