Since Sunday, we've been dealing with a strong Nor’easter with lots of wind making the ocean and sound pretty much impossible to fish. I heard, our friends in Cape Hatteras has taken a pounding this week. Reports coming in that it's been just as bad as a hurricane from the flooding they've seen this week. But now it looks like we're going to have some light winds over the next few days making it possible for anglers to get back out on the water.

Lucky enough this week, we have seen some nice catches of Speckled Trout even with all the bad weather. The anglers fishing the backwater creeks are having some good luck. I know the creeks off the Neuse River was producing some very nice fish during this past weekend. Most anglers are having the best luck on 17MR Mirrolures and Artificial Shrimp.

There's been some good action in Schoolhouse Creek over the last few days, Live Mud Minnows,17MR’s, Artificial Shrimp and Billy Bay Shrimp have all are producing fish.

Over the next few days, the winds are going to lay down making it possible for anglers to go out to the Cape Lookout Jetty. I know in the past, when we've had a hard Nor’easter like we've had this week; the Speckled Trout and Redfish will pile up on that jetty making for some good fishing. If you're heading out that way over the next few days we have a few Live Shrimp left plus plenty of Live Mud Minnows which are a must when fishing the jetty this time of the year.

Also, there's been some good catches of trout caught along the Oceanana Pier from the Surf this week. There's not that many people fishing that area because it has been so hit or miss but nice fish are still hanging in the Surf Zone to be caught. Anglers are using Mirrolures when fishing from the beach areas. One thing I can't stress enough is when fishing this time of year for Speckled Trout and Redfish “you have to fish slowly”.

One day this week in the bad weather, I was talking to one of our customers who's probably one of the best “Speckled Trout” fisherman in the area. We were talking about how slow is too slow when fishing for trout in the winter. He put it pretty simple so keep this in mind… if you can feel your lure on the end of your line then you're fishing too fast. So, remember that statement coming from one of the best in the area that’s been Speckled Trout fishing a very long time.

Last week, it was all Blue Fin Tuna talk around the town as we saw some of the best action we've seen in years. We had some warm water push in on us from the southwest winds last weekend that pretty much shut down the bite.  This week, there's been a few fish caught and some lost but the bite has slowed down. I know boats who fished yesterday which was the first day back out since Saturday and they didn't have much luck.

What I'm hearing from the anglers – they think the fish are still around.  It's just the water hasn't got right like it was at the beginning of last week when the bite was so “HOT” plus they think it's going to happen within the next few days. We still have plenty of Ballyhoo In-Stock and all the Blue Water Candy Jags that have been working so far ready for action.

What we did see happen with the warm water push was we got another run of King Mackerel last Saturday. The North West Places fired back up with good numbers of Kings being caught. I heard one boat had over 30 fish in a short amount of time fishing. So, you might want to keep that in mind if you're heading out this weekend. We still have plenty of Cigar Minnows and Dead Bait Rigs ready to go.

Black Sea Bass fishing is still good with anglers catching limits of fish and they're some of the biggest you'll catch all year.

So, fishing is still pretty good!  You have to pick your days and go when you get an opportunity because “Old Man Winter” is just around the corner.
