Fishing Report 12/24/2014

All of us here at Chasin Tails Outdoors want to wish you and your family a very “Merry Christmas”. We are truly blessed to have such a great customer base and enjoy seeing each and everyone of you come through the shop. We're already looking forward to the 2015 Season and hopefully; it’s going to be one of the best fishing years we have ever seen.

This week the Blue Fin Tuna bite has fired back up. Last Sunday through today they have been catching fish again. Now it seems the fish are pretty close to the beach, I know fish have been caught from the Sea Buoy area back toward the Trawler Buoy. I heard of some big fish that's been caught just off the Dead Tree Hole area. This time around not as many boats are fishing for them but the fish are biting again pretty good. I always kind of judge the bite on which boats are out fishing. I saw this week some boats that's been tied to the dock for a few weeks go fishing again, so that's a very good sign the fish are biting. It looks like we have a blow coming in over the next two days, then Friday through the weekend looks pretty good to get back out. We have plenty of “Big Ballyhoo” in-stock along with the popular colors that's been working well in the Blue Water Candy Jag 8.

Again last weekend, we saw a great Red Drum bite at the Cape Lookout Rock Jetty plus the Black Drum have moved in with them. The size of the Red Drum has been lower slot to mid slot fish with some bigger ones mixed in. It seems there's a few different schools working the jetty because I've heard of some anglers catching small fish and other anglers catching nicer fish so that tells me that there's more than one school on the jetty. As far as, the Black Drum nothing huge but perfect eating size fish. Live Mud Minnows fished along the rocks and bait shrimp fished on the bottom is working the best. If you get lucky and get on a school of Red Drum plus get them fired up feeding they'll bite Berkley Gulp pretty good as well.

As for the Speckled Trout action at the rocks, I talked with some customers that went yesterday and they caught good numbers of small Speckled Trout bringing home a few 19″ fish for dinner. So, even as late as it is in December there's still some trout hanging at the rocks. The main thing I'm hearing is try different areas when fishing the rocks right now. Most of the action has been middle way back to the beach, but don’t count out the deeper part of the rocks you just never know once we get into winter like this. One trip out may produce and the next nothing. This coming up weekend is looking good for fishing the jetty at the Cape since light winds are in the forecast.

Browns Island and Bear Inlet areas are still holding good numbers of winter time Redfish schools that have moved out into the Surf. Also, riding looking for Redfish schools and just working along the beach blind casting both has been producing fish. The schools seem to be hanging right in the wash along the beach. Berkley Gulp baits are working well when you locate the fish.

As far as the Speckled Trout fishing, the best of what we're seeing is in the back of the creeks. Schoolhouse Creek has been holding some fish but really any creek that has good deep water in it plus docks will be good spots to look for trout right now in the area. It's been very hit or miss but there's some nice fish in the creeks. What we've been seeing the best bait is Live Mud Minnows fished very slow. Also, a few anglers are catching them on 17MR Mirrolures and Billy Bay Halo Shad. The Neuse River still remains good for trout fishing, mostly the action is coming in the creek off the river toward New Bern but the Oriental area and South River area both has been holding a few fish but that area's been hit or miss. Mirrolure 17MR,18MR, 3D Minnows and Billy Bay Halo Shad have been the go to lures for the river. I've not heard of any huge fish but plenty of anglers are catching limits of 2 to 3lb fish.

I didn't hear of any big King Mackerel action this past weekend but we're getting ready to have another big SW blow over the next two days. A few weeks ago when this happen it pushed the warmer water right back to us and the Kings moved right in with it putting them all around the North West Places and Big 10 / Little 10 area. I'm not saying it’s going to happen but there's a pretty good chance it might. We do have Cigar Minnows in stock for bait which would be the best to use on Dead Bait Rigs. This time of year who knows but it's going to be nice this weekend with light winds so it might be worth a try. If they aren't there make sure you take along some Squid because the Black Sea Bass fishing has been pretty good in the last few weeks with some of the biggest ones caught we've seen all season.
