Fishing Report June 6 2013 06/06/2013

Cobia Report for this week

the bite continues but we haven't weighed as many this week.  Reports are that several have been caught in the range of 25 to 30 lbs.  Our scales have weighed 16 citations this week with the largest being 58 lbs.  The majority have been in the mid 50 lb range.  We're still hearing reports from south of us that their Cobia bite is still “HOT” so we could see the bite continue for a couple more weeks.

Inshore/Near Shore:

Cobia are being caught right in the Inlet, up to Cape Lookout and as far down as Salter Path.  The majority are being caught sight casting in the bait balls as they remain plentiful.  Artificial eels, Spro Bucktails or Blue Water Candy Jigs tipped with Gulp or Gotcha Curlytail Grubs are the way to go when sight casting.  Some boats are bottom fishing also with fresh dead menhaden which we have plenty freshly caught packaged in a 3 lb bag.  Don't miss out on catching one of these monsters because they will soon move on.

The Speckled Trout bite has increased this week in the Newport River, Haystacks, surrounding creeks and on up Core Creek around the 101 Hwy Bridge.  We weighed one last Saturday that went over 5 1/2 lbs from the Newport River area.  17 MR Mirrolures,  Live Mud Minnows, 3″ Gulp in White or New Penny, Redfish Magic Spinnerbaits are good choices to fish with.

Red Drum – yesterday we weighed Red Drum  19″ to 20″ caught in the Haystacks.  You can fish in all the marshes – Middle Marsh, Hoop Pole Creek Marsh, Carrot Island, Bells Creek, Eastman Creek and up to Back Creek should all  produce drum action.  Now if you want live bait Mud Minnows will be your choice but artificial produce great action – 3 or 4″ Gulp New Penny, White or Natural, Top Dog Mirrolure, Redfish Magic Spinnerbaits, old faithful Gold Johnson Spoon or Popping Cork with DOA Shrimp are great to try.

Flounder has moved into the inshore waters in the same areas as Red Drum and Speckled Trout.  Try searching around bridges and the Port Wall for larger flatties using Bucktails tipped with Gulp 4″ Shrimp or Live Mud Minnows.

Spanish and Blues – are being caught right off the beach and around AR 315 at early morning light and during late afternoon increasing in size everyday.  Trolling with Clarkspoons Silver or Gold with a #1 Planer or Trolling Weight will produce action and quantities for your cooler.

Sheephead – fish around any structure – Atlantic Beach Bridge, Beaufort Bridge, Port Wall and Railroad Tracks.  The bait to use is Live Fiddler Crabs which we have in stock and Live Sea Urchins.  Already we've weighed some up to 10 lbs.

Gray Trout are being caught in the Turning Basin, Railroad Track and the Inlet using Stingsilvers or Spec-rigs tipped with shrimp.  In the mix will be Hogfish and Croakers using fresh shrimp and bloodworms.

Piers/Surf:

Oceanana Pier – catching Blues and Spanish on the end of the pier plugging Gotcha Plugs.  Flounder is being caught right before the breakers using Live Mud Minnows.  Black Drum and Sheephead are in the same area around the pylons using bait shrimp for the Black Drum and Live Fiddler Crabs for the Sheephead.  Puppy Drum can be caught right in the surf zone with Live Mud Minnows or Finger Mullet.  Hogfish, Croakers, Sea Mullet and Spots are also being caught using fresh shrimp or bloodworms on a bottom rig.

Surf – Fort Macon has been producing great catches this week with Flounder using Live Mud Minnows or Gulp White Swimming Mullet/White Jig Head.  The surf at Fort Macon have produced Puppy Drum using Live Mud Minnows and Finger Mullet.  Sheephead fishing on the rocks will surely win you a catch using Live Fiddler Crabs.  Blues and Spanish both have been caught up there this week too.

Surf fisherman up and down the beach are catching Puppy Drum, Flounder, Blues, Spanish, Pompano and Spots using same bait as listed above.

Offshore:

The offshore boats are racking up on Dolphin trolling Medium Ballyhoo using Pink or Chartreuse Skirts plus Wahoo trolling Medium Ballyhoo on Black/Purple or Red/Black Skirts.  The Dolphin are being caught at the Sea Buoy, North West Places but the bigger dolphin will be from the 14 Buoy to the Big Rock.  Yellow Fin, Black Fin and Amberjacks will also be mixed in with the Dolphin.

King Mackerel are now being caught on the east side of Cape Lookout – 1700 Rock, East Rock, 30 Minute Rock also around North West Places using King Rigs with Live Menhaden or Dead Bait Rigs with Cigar Minnows.

Bottom fisherman – are reporting solid catches with Grouper, Triggerfish, Black Sea Bass (opened June 1) at offshore wrecks at 240 Rock, 210 Rock, AR 305 using Squid Wings for Black Sea Bass and Triggerfish and Cigar Minnows for Grouper.
