Fishing Report 03/17/2011

We have a great looking weekend coming up should entice some people getting out and getting on the water.  Saturday they are calling for temperatures in the 70’s and light wind. We have been getting calls all day from people that are going to try and take advantage of the warm weather and get out on the water. Some are going to surf fish, inshore fish and even talked to a few that are heading offshore.

There are still some Redfish at the Cape Lookout Rock Jetty; they are ranging from 18 to 30 inches. Yes, there are lots of small fish there but a few good ones are mixed in also. I spoke with a customer today that had a report that there are a few schools of Redfish starting to group up around Shark Island. Reports this week that some schools of Reds are working the inshore waters also the Haystacks and Core Creek would be good area to try. Berkley Gulp Baits, Z-Man scented Baits, Cut Mullet, Live Mud Minnows and bait shrimp would be all good choices to be using.

Last week when we were in Georgia for the IFA Redfish tour the only thing we could get them to eat was Berkley Gulp 3” New Penny Shrimp. You could throw other things at them and they would swim right by it. So, I would think that would be a good choice to use in this area right now.

Also, I heard today that there has been some Bluefish caught offshore of Cape Lookout this week. That’s a great sign that the fish are on their way in.

This past week there has been a few puffer fish, dogfish, black drum and red drum that have came off the rocks at Fort Macon. I had a report come in yesterday that some Sea Mullet has been caught off the Sheraton Pier and Fort Macon. The best baits to be using from the surf and piers are bait shrimp, cut mullet and squid. With the Sea Mullets being caught off the piers this week there should be some in the Inlet, Dead Tree Hole and out the Shipping Channel. I have not heard of any reports but if they’re catching them off the piers they have to be coming into the area.  Bait Shrimp fished on a Speck-rig is the way to go for springtime sea mullets. You cannot find fresh shrimp this time of the year but we put up some shrimp last fall just for the springtime Sea Mullet run.  Just remember it’s still early and the water is still cold so don’t get discouraged if you don’t load the boat down with fish.

Looks like a great weekend get out and catch some fish!!!  We have all bait in stock!!
