Fishing Report 03/26/2015

Well here we go again, looks like we're going to have a cool weekend with temps back in the low 50’s.  But after that, the forecast into April looks good with temps back in the 60's and 70’s so keep your fingers crossed this is the last cold snap of the Spring.  The last few days sure have been nice with warm temps, it puts that feeling in the air that “Fishing” is getting ready to bust loose.  We're getting ready – just about everyday this week product has been showing up, so the walls are stocked full ready for fish action.

Inshore / Nearshore:

Unfortunately, I've not heard all that much this week but there's been some fish caught.  A couple of customers came by yesterday that fished around the Haystacks with Live Mud Minnows and found some Redfish that were willing to eat.  They caught quite a few before the fish shut down.  Late last week, I got some good news from Sam who makes our custom Spec-Rigs, he fished the inlet area and caught a few Sea Mullet. When I say a few it was 3 so it’s not wide open yet on the mullets. But I was surprised he caught any how cold it was. So that’s a sign, they're starting to move along the beaches and make their Spring run. I remember last year by mid-April, we already had some really nice schools of Sea Mullets in our area which that’s only a few weeks away.

Nick part of the crew from the shop, hit the Neuse River yesterday and had some great luck.  He caught a few Green Trout plus around 12 or so Rock Fish using Super Flukes on Slayer Jig Heads. The Shad fishing around the Pitch Kettle area is still doing well plus on up the river.

Also, I'm still hearing of some nice Speckled Trout being caught in the river, but the guys that are catching them are being very tight lipped because it's just a few creeks holding fish right now.  But it’s good to know they're still caching Speckled Trout after the fish kill we had a month ago.

There's plenty of Spiny Dog Fish showing up along the beach and around the reefs. Cut Mullet fished on the bottom and Squid will get you some action with that.  A few boats made it out to some of the Nearshore reefs last weekend to find plenty of Sea Bass but with a lot of short fish, seems to get those keepers you have to get on off the beach right now.

Piers / Surf:

Since, the Oceanana Pier opened last week some anglers have been trying their luck. So far, it’s been somewhat slow but a few fish were there to tug on.  The best action is Dog Fish, not a real sought after fish but it’s early spring and if it pulls back it’s a good fish right now.  Squid and Cut Mullet fished on the bottom will get the job done for them.

The last few days I've been hearing of a few small Puffer fish caught along the Surf.  No big numbers, but last week I didn't hear of any so fish are starting to move in. Bait Shrimp fished on the bottom will be the best bait for the Puffers and you might even run across some Black Drum or possibly a Red Drum.  I can't wait to here of a Bluefish being caught because then things will really fire off.

Offshore:

I've still haven't heard of any Yellow Fin or Wahoo but not that many boats have been offshore to try with the up and down weather pattern.  I did hear of a pretty good Yellow Fin bite north of us this week, so hopefully; we'll get some of the action over the next few weeks.  I looked back to last year's records and we started weighing in Wahoo the first week in April.

Bottom fishing still remains good if you can make it to the fishing grounds. The best of it is still out at the ledges around the 14 Buoy on out.

The scale doctor was by this week making sure our outside scale was on point for the season. So, it's all certified and ready to start hanging some fish, now we are waiting on you.

It's that time again… 4th Annual Cobia Challenge, last year was the biggest yet with the winner taking home over $2,000 in CASH & PRIZES that is not bad for just a $50 Entry Fee, along with fishing on your time. So spread the word and lets make this year the biggest yet. Registration will open April 1st at the shop but you can also call the shop to get registered as there is a 3 day waiting period before you can weigh a fish. So if you live out of town and want to fish give us a call so you will have you 3 days in before you get here to fish.
