Fishing Report 03/27/2014

It's been cold again this week but the last two weekends were pretty mild and it looks like this weekend through next week it's going to be back in the 60’s and 70’s.

Inshore:

The best action has been from Red Drum. The nearby creeks are holding good numbers of fish in the 16 to 24″ range. Reports are that up on the flats and in the bays upper slot fish are being caught. I know of a few nice fish that were caught along Core Creek last weekend.

Also, I'm hearing of some good action down in the Swansboro Marsh as well. Drum Inlet has been producing good numbers of fish over the last few weeks. Live Mud Minnows have been the bait of choice or frozen finger mullet. As for artificial, Berkley Gulp and Z-Man with Pro-Cure has been producing the best. Last weekend, I even heard of a few fish caught on Topwater. Along with the Reds there has been some Black Drum in the mix too.

The Speckled Trout action is getting better being the water has warmed up some. The creeks are holding fish. I talked with a few anglers that have fished the Neuse River who had some good luck. They were telling me on days the water temps got over 55 degrees the fish really started to feed.

Yesterday, I had a customer stop in and pick up some 3” Vudu Shrimp and told me he was catching 4 to 5lb fish. He wouldn't give up his location but it sounded like a backwater creek. Live Mud Minnows, 17MR Mirrolures, Soft Dines and Vudu Shrimp all have been working the best.

We just got in a shipment of 3” Live Target Shrimp that looks just about as real as it gets. I can't see how a Speckled Trout or Red Drum is going to turn them down.

There's been some action happening at AR 315, 320 and 330 with Sea Bass but it seems the farther you go out the more keepers you get into. But I've seen some nice keeper fish coming from 315 and even along the Port Wall. When fishing the reefs this time of the year Live Mud Minnows and Squid fished on the bottom will get you results.

I've heard this week, the Puffer fish are making their way up the beach. Surf City and Bouge Inlet Piers are reporting some nice sized Puffers being caught. Bouge Inlet Pier had great action this past weekend so we should start to see Puffers along our beach this week. They even reported a few small Sea Mullets coming through.

Piers / Surf:

Fort Macon last weekend produced some nice Red Drum. One customer came back by the shop with a nice 25″ fish and caught three more. The Piers are beginning to catch some nice Blow Fish along with some small Sea Mullets. There has been a few Blow Fish caught that's been over 1lb.

Also, good numbers of Spiny Dog Fish are being caught off the beach and piers. Bait Shrimp, Mullet and Live Minnows have been the best bait so far for action. It’s getting real close when anglers should really start to see some good action from the surf. It shouldn't be too long, if we can get a good week of warm weather some Blue Fish should start showing up.

Offshore:

A few boats made it out last weekend to the Blue Water. It wasn't on fire but there was some good catches of Wahoo and Black Fin Tuna. I even heard of a few citation Wahoo that were caught. From what we've been hearing the Big Rock back down to the Rise and the Swansboro Hole are the best areas.  It’s not on fire yet but we are right on the verge when the Wahoo bite should really bust loose.

As for the bottom anglers, the Trigger Fish bite has been “great”. The best action has been out past that 30 mile range. Also, those venturing out have been coming back with some nice Sea Bass and I'm hearing of some nice Grouper being caught but the season is closed on them so they have to be released right now. But when it opens back up it should be some good fishing for the Groupers.
