It looks like we have a full weekend coming up with warm weather and sunny skies. I know most of you have been waiting for a break like this. Last weekend we had one good day; then cold and windy for Sunday but this weekend looks way different.

Inshore:

The Sea Mullet bite has really fired up over the past week with all the warm weather. Last Saturday boats were catching over 70 fish a trip. The fish seem to be mixed up in size but anglers aren't having any problem catching some nice ones to take home for dinner. From the Port Wall area back toward the Inlet/Coast Guard area is producing well. This weekend should be good for them since it’s been warm most of the week. Over the next few weeks, we should start to see more and more mullets increasing in size showing up. Spec-Rigs tipped with Bait Shrimp or Fish Bites will be the best bait to use.

We have a “NEW” custom local hand tied Spec-Rig in stock that is working very well on the mullets. Anglers are also catching a good quanitity of croakers off the bottom in the same areas. The bad thing is they aren't very big in size but there's lots of small ones. I've heard of a few big enough to make it into the cooler. There's been a few Gray Trout moving in the area also over the last week. I heard of a few caught around the wall and railroad tracks while anglers are Sea Mullet fishing.

Speckled Trout fishing has really fired off this past week in the rivers. We had one customer that released at least a 7lb fish caught in a creek off the Neuse. Another angler had good luck with fish in the 2 to 3lb range plus catching lots of small fish too. They have started to hit Topwater Plugs like Rapala Skitter Walks and Heddon Spook Jrs plus Mirrolure 17MRs have been working as well. Just remember the Speckled Trout is still closed it's all catch and release we don’t want anyone to get a ticket for keeping a trout.

There's been some Redfish action in the bays and creeks and still some along the beaches. The water is close to hitting 60 degrees and when that happens we should see a really good Top Water bite turn on.

We haven't weighed in any Flounder yet but I've heard a few small ones were caught over the last week around the port area and a few keepers from the anglers fishing the creeks. It's still early but it won't be long until we start to have some “Flat Fish” move inside.

As far as the artificial reefs I know of a few that's been caught but the weather hasn't been all that great for fishing in the Ocean. Reefs like 330 and 285 on off the beach aways will probably be the best bet if you want to try some “Bucktail Jigging” using a Spro 2oz Bucktail tipped with Berkley Gulp 4” baits should get a hook-up if there's some flatfish on the bottom. Each April these reefs will produced fish well before they move into the inshore waters.

I'm hearing of some Albacore schools on out around 330 and on the east side near 285. No reports of any along the beaches yet but with the water warming up it won't be long, they could really pop-up anyday. A customer ask today about Bonito but I've not seen any or heard of any yet. Usually mid to late April into the 1st of May is when we see them show up.

I still haven't seen or heard of any Bluefish yet. There's been some working off the East Side but none have been reported here yet. I've been checking with some friends down the beach south of us and received a few reports of some caught but not many. Checking back last year it was around this week that we saw our first sign of them. They'll show up like the Sea Mullets did over night. So, I wouldn't be surprised at all if there aren't a few caught this weekend with the warm weather we're going to have over the next few days with the sunny skies.

Piers / Surf:

Finally, we're starting to catch some Sea Mullets on the beach. There also has been some croakers in the mix. Bait Shrimp fished on the bottom will be the best for action on the mullets. Now, we just need the Oceanana Pier to open back up and anglers could really get some numbers of mullets. I have heard they're going to try to open up by Easter with some renovations in the pier house.

There's still some Red Drum working the beach to be caught.  I had a customer send me a picture of one he caught from the Surf the other day. The Fort Macon Rocks have slowed down some with the Red Drum but with the rough water it’s been hard to fish it good. I bet there will be some caught there this weekend. Bluefish should be showing up anyday now. Bait Shrimp, Cut Mullet, Live Minnows and Squid will all be good choices to fish with.

Offshore:

There's not much to report since the last few weekend winds has kept everyone in on the docks. Today, I know of a few going out so maybe we'll have some good reports to pass on. I know everyone is ready for action as the Wahoo fishing and Yellow Fin fishing should be ready to fire off.

It really stinks with the winds because we have some of the best looking “2014 Ballyhoo” from Baitmaster and Bionic in the freezer that we have ever had and the weather won't let the anglers get out. We are in high hopes all that’s getting ready to change.
