Fishing Report 04/27/2011

Cobia Report: For the last two weeks reports have been that they are having a great season in the Charleston, SC area. The report is that there are more fish than they have seen in years.  There has been 3 reported being caught on the Cape Lookout Shoals this past week. One guy was catching Blue Fish in the Hook of the Cape and had a huge Cobia come up and take his Blue Fish away. It should be any day when the numbers of Cobia show. The bait balls are out there in big numbers, where there is lots of bait so the Cobia are not far behind.  We have numerous Cobia Lures IN STOCK from Bucktails to Eels. We also have Menhaden and Chum IN STOCK ready to go.

Inshore: The Flounder bite really started picking up this past Easter weekend. Good catches are coming from the Cape Lookout Rock Jetty. There is lots of keeper fish hanging around the jetty. Most of the jetty flounder are being caught on Live Mud Minnows fished on a Flounder Rig. AR 315, 320 and 330 all has good numbers of Flounder holding on them. Spro Bucktails seem to work the best for the reef Flounder. 2oz to 3oz tipped with Berkley Gulp 4” Shrimp and Uncle Josh Flounder Strips are working well. Live Mud Minnows fished on the bottom around the reefs is also producing keeper fish.

The Gray Trout fishing is at its best in the Turning Basin back to the Inlet. Lots of small fish but they are some areas around the Coast Guard Station that has been holding some nice 2lb to 4lb Gray Trout. Spec-Rigs tipped with bait shrimp and Fish-bite shrimp have been working the best on the grays. Also, you can catch them by jigging sting-silvers in the same areas.

Sea Mullets are still in the Turning Basin back out to the Shipping Channel. Spec-rigs tipped with bait shrimp, Bloodworms and Fish-bites all have been working well.

Huge schools of Blue Fish are hanging around Ruff Point just outside of the Inlet. Jig Fish Lures, Crippled Herrings, Gotcha-plugs, Kastmasters, Hopkins and Glass Minnows Jigs are the bait to use. Most are in the 1lb to 2lb range but there are some bigger fish up around Cape Lookout in the 3lb to 5lb range with some Chopper Blues that have been caught on the Cape Lookout Shoals in the 12lb range.

There were a few Spanish Mackerel caught this past week up and down the beach. Most of them were caught trolling Clarkspoons.

Redfish are starting to move into the shallows around the Haystacks and Core Creek area. They are just starting to hit at topwater baits, Marsh Works Spinner Baits have been working well along with Berkley Gulp Baits and Z-Man Baits. There have been some Bull Redfish hanging around Shark Island with some of the fish over 341/2”.  Most are being caught on Berkley Gulp Baits and Cut Mullet or Cut Menhaden.

False Albacore and Bonito are starting to show up around the near shore reefs. There have been a lot of Bonito off the New River Inlet moving this way. Most are being caught on Jig Fish Lures, P-Line Laser Lures, Crippled Herrings, Kastmasters and Stingsilvers.

Piers / Surf: The Oceanna and Sheraton Piers have been producing lots of Blue Fish and a few Spanish. Most are being caught on Gotcha-plugs and Jig Fish Lures. Sea Mullets and Puffer Fish are still out there in good numbers to be caught. Bait Shrimp, Bloodworms and Fish-bites all are working well on them. From the surf; Blue Fish, Sea Mullets, Puffer Fish, Dog Fish, Black Drum and Redfish using Bait Shrimp, Bloodworms, Cut Mullet, Finger Mullet and Squid are being caught.

Offshore: Not many people made it Offshore this past weekend because of the wind but the ones that did caught a few fish. There were some nice Wahoo caught a few Black Fin, Yellow Fin and Dolphin. You still have to get out around the Big Rock area to get any results.  This weekend looks good if you want to get Offshore. We have fresh caught Bionic Ballyhoo IN STOCK if you are heading out this coming up weekend.
