Fishing Report 05/01/2014

I am Charleston this week trying to find some Redfish for the 1st Redfish Tour Stop.. so here is a quick report from the shop:

Inshore:

A lot of Speckled Trout has been caught this week but released since the season is closed until June 15th.  The Core Creek Area, Neuse River, Hancock Creek, Slocum Creek and Cahoogue Creek are producing nice Specks up to 4lbs.  The Topwater bite is good early in the mornings and late in the afternoons using 17MR, Rapala Twitch-Baits and Soft Dines plus Live Mud Minnows on a cork.

Flounder is beginning to work inshore but the majority caught this week have been on the Artificial Reefs 315, 320, 330 and on the east side around 285.  Anglers are using 2oz Spro Bucktails tipped with 4″ Gulp White or Sugar/Spice Shrimp.

There's good numbers of Redfish around the marshes, in the Haystacks and up Core Creek.  The bite is improving each day as the water warms up around Shark Island and on the Shoals.  The best bait is Live Mud Minnows, Gulp or Cut Mullet will hang you one of these Reds.

The Sea Mullet and Gray Trout bite is excellent around the Turning Basin, Railroad Tracks, Coast Guard Station and in the Inlet. Use Spec-rigs tipped with fresh Bait Shrimp plus the new Hand-tied Spec-rig we are carrying has been working GREAT!  Stingsilvers and Jig-fish will land the Grays for you jigging them off the bottom.

The Bluefish bite has improved this week with good numbers  from the Cape Lookout Rock Jetty and AR 315 both are the HOT SPOTS!!  Artificial baits to cast are: Jig-fish, Kastmasters, Stingsilvers and the new Hogy Glass Minnow anytime of the day.  The Hatteras Blues could turn on this weekend so be ready to land one of these monsters using finger mullet on a finger mullet rig.

There is Bonita out around AR315 casting small spoons reeling them back “FAST” right at daylight after the sun comes up troll Yo-Zuri small deep diving minnow to land these fish.

Surf and Piers:

The Oceanana Pier is reporting Bluefish being caught on the end using Got-cha Plugs.  The Black Drum bite has turned on with fishermen catching 4 to 5lb fish using fresh Bait Shrimp or Sand Fleas.  Also, in the mix are Sea Mullets, Puffers, Hogfish, Spots and Sheepshead fishing with fresh Shrimp and Bloodworms plus we have in stock Sea Urchins for the Sheepshead to entice their bite.  We heard  some Spanish was caught on the Bogue Inlet Pier this week, so they should be our way very soon if not this weekend.

In the surf around Fort Macon Park anglers are catching Bluefish, Black Drum, Puppy Drum, Mullets, Puffers, Sheepshead and Dog-fish.  All of these can be caught using fresh Shrimp, Bloodworms, Cut Mullet, Finger Mullet and Squid.

Offshore:

The Wahoo bite is excellent around the Big Rock, the Rise and the Swanboro Hole being the best three places. We weighed a nice Wahoo on  Tuesday coming in at 54 lbs.  Also, Black Fin and Yellow Fin Tuna plus nice Dolphin are in the mix.    Anglers are trolling Medium Ballyhoo. We have a good fresh stock of Baitmaster or Bionic for your personal selection. The Blue Water Candy Ballyhoo rigs in Purple/Black and Red/Black are the best two for Wahoo.  Just a reminder we are carrying the Blue Water Candy Jags plus a great selection of offshore lures.

Now let's go bottom fishing – Northwest Places, Big 10-Little 10, over on the east side try the 1700 Rock, D Wreck and the Atlas Tanker are all stacked up with Black Sea Bass, Grouper (season opening today May 1st) and Triggerfish using Squid Wings (we have in stock) and Cigar Minnows.
