Fishing Report 05/19/2011

Cobia Report: Fishing has been off some this week on the Cobia because of the wind. Every day this week the mornings have started off with light winds but by the time the sun gets up good it goes to blowing 20kts. We have weighed in some fish this week even in the rough conditions. Last Friday and Saturday were both very good with lots of fish being caught. I feel like tomorrow through the weekend the bite will be on. It’s going to be light winds and sunny skies for the next few days making spotting bait balls easy.  This past weekend the bite was good just outside of the inlet down to the Sheraton Pier. Who knows where the “HOT” bite will be after all the wind. Best places to look would be in that area and up to Cape Lookout. Really any bait ball you come by there could be a Cobia on it. Spro Bucktails, Blue Water Candy Bucktails, Berkley Gulp Power Bait Eels, Gulp Eels, Gulp 6” Grubs, Gotcha 8” Grubs and Tsunami Eels all are working well. For the bottom fisherman dead menhaden fished on the bottom with a Cobia Rig will get the job done. We still have a good supply of Fresh Caught Menhaden bagged up in 3lb and 3pk bags and Custom Cobia Rigs to go with it.

Inshore: Spanish Mackerel has shown up in good numbers off the beach. Most are being caught trolling Clarkspoons, Mackerel Trees and the Bird Rig with a Squid Rig attached behind it.  Blue Fish are in the mix also being caught on the same stuff as you troll for the Spanish.

Flounder bite is starting to turn on now on the inshore waters. They have been picking up some nice keeper fish drifting in the ICW and behind Shackleford Banks. Most are using Live Mud Minnows and Berkley Gulp Mud Minnows. There has been a few caught around the port wall in the last week also. The reefs 315, 320 and 330 all are still holding very good numbers of Flounder. Most of the action out there is coming off Live Mud Minnows and Spro 2oz to 3oz Bucktails tipped with 4” Berkley Gulp and Uncle Josh Flounder Strips.

Redfish have been very scattered out this past week. It just does not seem like there are any big schools around in the marsh areas, you will catch one here and there. When we have found them they are hitting Rapala Skitter Walks, Heddon Spook Jrs, Berkley Gulp, Z-Man, Redfish Magic’s and Marsh Works Spinner Baits. Good areas to look have been Haystacks, Core Creek Bays and Carrot Island.

A few Sheepshead have been making their way into the Bridges and Port Wall. I had a report that there were large numbers hanging around the Cape Lookout Rock Jetty last weekend. You can pick up some bottom feeders in the Turning Basin; Sea Mullets, Gray Trout and Hog Fish. Most of the bottom action is just coming off Bait Shrimp or Squid fished on Spec-Rigs or Bottom Rigs.

Piers / Surf: The Spanish and Blue Fish have been great over the last week. Most are plugging Gotcha-Plugs and the “NEW Pole – Kat Lures” we have IN STOCK NOW. There have been a few keeper Flounder caught in the Surf Zone and from the Piers. Most are using Live Mud Minnows fished on a Flounder Rig. For the bottom fisherman Sea Mullets, Hog Fish, Sharks and Spots using Bait Shrimp, Mullet, Bloodworms or Squid all are working well. There are still some Chopper Blue Fish being caught in the Surf Zone. Most are being caught on Frozen Finger Mullet fished on a Bluefish Rig.

Offshore: THIS IS GOING TO BE THE WEEKEND TO GET OUT. The weather is  calling for light winds Friday through Sunday. There should be a great bite on the Gaffer Dolphin. The boats that have made it out there have been doing very well on them. Most are from the 90ft Drop out to the Big Rock area. There are some nice Wahoo and Sailfish in the mix also. If you’re needing Ballyhoo we have a good supply of Bionic Ballyhoo ready to go.
