Inshore / Nearshore:

We're still seeing some great Cobia action in our area, this past weekend we saw very good numbers being brought by the shop to get weighed. Just about everybody that had a fish to weigh had more than one in the cooler. Last Sunday, I know some boats reported seeing 12 or more fish swimming around bait balls at one time. Also, we weighed our largest fish this past weekend topping the scales at 88lbs which is leading the Cobia Challenge plus weighed many in the 60lb range.

Over the past week, the best action has been sight fishing the bait balls along the beach and up to 3 miles off the beach. Just because you don’t see a Cobia in a bait ball doesn't mean there is none there. I know of one boat that had 5 the other day that never saw any fish. They were catching them under the bait balls right off the bottom. Also, we been seeing fish still being caught in the inlet and up at the Cape bottom fishing with dead shad. The largest fish we weighed this week was caught in Beaufort Inlet off the bottom. The last few days have been a bit choppy along the beach but we're getting some more light winds, which should make for good sight fishing.

The Spanish fishing bite picked up even more this past weekend continuing right into this week. The water is just about as clear as it will get in our area and the Spanish love it. I know up toward the Cape it’s almost tropical looking it's so clear. Trolling Clarkspoons along the beach with #1 Planers and trolling weights have been working very well to find the best action. The color didn't really seem to make any difference this past weekend but when fishing for Spanish you can never go wrong with a Gold or Silver. Squid Rigs behind a Bird along with Mackerel Trees are also a good choice when trolling along the beach. Also, there's been a few caught in the inlet area on Jig Fish Lures and Got-Cha Plugs by casting. You'll catch plenty of small bluefish while fishing for the Spanish using the same lures. Keep your eye out – we're working on final details for the Spanish Jackpot Challenge, which starts July 1st – September 30th.

Flounder fishing was pretty good over the Memorial Day Weekend, with good numbers of fish being caught at the AR reefs like 315, 320, 330 and 285.  I actually saw some three man limits of fish being brought in which I haven't seen yet this season.  Jigging Spro 2oz Bucktails tipped with 4” Gulp Shrimp was working the best along with a few being caught on Live Mud Minnows. I did talk to one customer that had some great luck last week behind Shackleford Banks drifting Live Mud Minnows along the channel. They were catching keeper fish on every cast; which is a great sign that some fish have moved inside the inlets.  Now, we should start seeing some Flounder being caught around the bridges and docks along the waterway. When fishing these areas Live Mud Minnows seem to work the best along with the Berkley Gulp Mud Minnows. Keep your eye out for details on – the Flounder Jackpot Challenge, which starts on July 1st – October 31st

Sheepshead fishing has been pretty good this week, I've seen some 4lb fish being caught just no huge monster yet but they usually don’t show up until mid-June. Nick, from the shop went out Monday at the Atlantic Beach Bridge and caught six on Live Fiddler Crabs pretty quick. Right now, the bridges will be the hot spots to try. We do have Live Fiddler Crabs in-stock now and getting ready to bring Live Sea Urchins in as well. Keep your eye out as we're working on the final details for the 2nd Annual Sheepshead Challenge, which will start on July 1st – August 31st

Pier / Surf:

Over the last week, we've had some great water conditions with just about perfect weather as you can get. The ocean is a nice blue green color plus crystal clear almost tropic looking along the surf.  The Spanish fishing has been pretty steady off the piers using Got-cha plugs. Some days have been better than others but you know the saying “that's fishing” but if you're there when they move in, it's been on.  Also, there's plenty of Bluefish to catch in with the Spanish.

With the great Cobia bite we've even seen even a few were caught off the piers over the past week. There's been plenty of bait coming down the beach, so you never know when you might see Cobia swimming on top or be under a bait ball. Make sure you have a Bucktail ready to go and not miss out on a great fish to catch especially from the pier.  There's been a few Flounder caught in the surf on Live Mud Minnows  along with a few Red Drum, Black Drum, Sea Mullets, Hogfish, Pompano and plenty Bluefish.  We're now getting out of the spring run pattern so we're going to start seeing a mixture of fish.

If you like to “Shark” fish from the beach, we've already seen some big ones this year. One customer showed me a picture of an 8ft Sandbar Shark he caught right off the beach night fishing over the weekend. We keep plenty of Menhaden and Shark Rigs in stock ready to go.

Offshore:

The bite was a bit slower this past weekend than the weekend before on the Dolphin but this week's bite seems to have picked back up with good numbers being caught from the 90ft Drop out over the last few days.  Just remember, if you like to Dolphin fish now’s the time the rest of May and June will be the best of it.

We still seeing some nice Wahoo and Black Fin Tuna in the area.  Bottom fishing is still pretty good with the Groupers, Sea Bass, Trigger Fish and Snappers the best area seems to be in the 35 mile range on the ledges and live bottom areas. It's that time of year that the Amber Jacks are moving in at our nearshore reefs, so if things are slow you can always get your line pulled from one of these guys.
