Fishing Report 06/05/2015

Inshore/Nearshore:

I've been getting a lot of calls about, are the Cobia still around and the answer is YES, we have been weighing fish everyday this week. It’s not as hot and heavy of action as it was 2 weeks ago but there's still plenty of fish around to catch. Anglers are still catching fish by sight fishing around the bait balls with the Emu Bucktails. We got a few more in last week being they were hard to get because they're all custom colors. Blue Water Candy and Spro Bucktails in the PINK colors have also been working well this week. Again, Live Eels have been hard to beat and we do still have a few left from our last shipment for the Cobia Season. The bottom fishing around the Cape and Beaufort Inlet areas with Dead Shad on the bottom has also been producing some fish. We should see the Cobia stay around for the next week or so because last year we caught them until the end of June.

Flounder fishing was pretty good last weekend with the majority being caught at the AR reefs just off the beach like 315, 320, 330 and 285 are all holding fish. It’s just a matter of coming across the right hump or structure that they're stacked on. Right now, if you find the right spot it doesn't take long to catch your limit. Fishing Spro 2oz Bucktails off the bottom tipped with a 4” Gulp White Shrimp is hard to beat. Also, it's a good idea to put out a Live Mud Minnow to drag while you're jigging, it's a good way to pick up a few more fish. A few are being caught behind Shackleford Banks drifting and around the bridges but nothing hot and heavy. I always like to fish with Live Mud Minnows in the backwaters when looking for Flounder.

This week, Sheepshead fishing has been picking up more and more with some good catches from the Atlantic Beach Bridge and we're starting to see them around the Port Wall now. We weighed a few over the weekend that went over the 6lb mark. We're getting ready for the Sheepshead Jackpot Challenge that's going to start July 1st – September 30th this year. This year we're going to run it an extra month longer than last year. It’s going to be a ” Winner Take All” with a $25 entry fee. So, if we get 50 anglers this year someone will take home over a $1,000 which I think is very possible from the showing of last year's

pot at $800 for the winner. We have a good supply of Live Fiddler Crabs and now Live Sea Urchins in stock for the rest of the summer.

Spanish fishing has been steady with good action along the beaches this week and last weekend. I know some of the MAD boats last weekend caught tons of Spanish.  Trolling along the beaches with Clarkspoons and Planers has been the best for good action. Also, I always like to put out a Squid Rig with a bird in the middle of the spread. There's been a few caught casting Jig Fish Lures and Got-Cha Plugs in the inlet. Plus, there's been plenty of Blue Fish in the mix also. Rule of thumb – when trolling for Spanish if you're just catching bluefish speed up a bit, that will help hook up more Spanish.

Redfish – bite has been very up and down in our area so far this season. We had our first of 3 events in the Carolina Redfish Series last weekend and we did see some good weights brought in. It took over 13lbs to take the $5K – 1st Place Prize. From what we could tell most anglers wouldn't give out too much info since Round 2 is next weekend. Down south of us and the Neuse River is where most of the fish came from.  The baits of choice were Top Dogs, Skitter Walks and Berkley Gulp.  The next event is next Saturday with the Captain's Meeting on Friday night at the shop between 5pm to 7pm, so come out and join the fun as there'll be another $5K up for grabs, guaranteed.

Pier / Surf:

Well, finally we saw our fish Chopper Bluefish this week, I was really beginning to think they weren't going to show up this year. But Sunday and Monday the Oceanana Pier saw quite a few plus along the Surf Zone had good action too. Topwaters Plugs, Got-Cha Plugs and Mullet were all working. If you've never caught one of these fish you're missing out. What we have seen so far has been between 6lbs up to 13lbs. So,hopefully; they'll stay around a week or so for anglers to have some fun.

The Spanish fishing has been good off the pier early in the mornings and late afternoons plus some good action from Blue Fish too. Also, we've seen a few Red Drum and Black Drum being caught along the beaches on Cut Mullet and Bait Shrimp fished on the bottom.  We are getting into that summer time pattern so as far as the bottom fisherman you're going to see a mixed bag. Fishing bait shrimp, bloodworms, fishbites, squid and mullet will all be good choices for some action.

If you're into Shark fishing off the beaches the action has been getting pretty good so far. I've already heard of some up to 7ft sharks being caught from the surf.

Offshore:

It's that time of year again for the “Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament” and this year the action should be good. Over the last few weeks we've been hearing of some good marlin action so we should see some fish being bought to the scales next week.  I will be having up dates on my Facebook page daily if a Blue is boated and on the way in to the new Big Rock Weigh Station. So, stay tuned starting Monday when the action begins.

The Dolphin bite is still pretty good out around the 14 Buoy and out toward the Big Rock. Also, I've heard of some good catches down south toward the Rise. It’s getting into summer now, so we'll now start to see some fish push in close to the beaches. Small and Medium Ballyhoo fished on Islander Lures, C&H Lures and Blue Water Candy Sea Witch Rigs all have been working great. Each weekend, we are still weighing a few Wahoo in the mix also and a few Black Fin Tuna. We still have plenty of Ballyhoo In-stock ready for your next blue water adventure.
