Inshore:

Well, we started off this week with light winds but the last couple of days have been a steady 15mph Southwest wind keeping most of the small boats inside the inlet. Last weekend and the first of this week Spanish fishing remained good. They're now being caught behind Shackleford and inside the inlet area. The shoals off the Fort Macon Rock Jetty, along the beaches and in the Shipping Channel are all producing fish. Anglers are trolling Clarkspoons, Mackerel Trees, Squid Chains and Bird Rigs.

Just remember Spanish Mackerel swim constantly, so one day they might be in the inlet feeding then the next they could be down the beach toward the Oceanana Pier feeding. Anglers that like to cast have been catching fish early in the mornings before the boat traffic gets out and during late afternoons around the inlet area when the Spanish are up on top feeding. Jig Fish Lures, Glass Minnows Jigs, Got-Cha Plugs are all good lures to use when casting. There's a good number of Blue Fish in the mix with the Spanish, they school with them so you'll run across them when your Spanish Fishing.

Flounder fishing seems to be getting better this week on the inside waters. For the last two days nobody has been able to go out to the reefs so anglers have fished inside. Also, one of my charter guys was drift fishing behind Shackleford and around the Port area catching some real nice fish. I talked with one guy today that has caught 12 keepers over the last few days in the Port area on Frozen Finger Mullet and Live Mud Minnows. Last weekend, the reefs were doing well on the Flatfish. Spro Bucktails tipped with Berkley Gulp 4” Shrimp, Live Mud Minnows and Frozen Finger Mullet are the bait to use. I haven't seen any huge fish but good numbers of 3lb class fish.

We saw the first Speckled Trout come into the shop this week since late winter when the NC Marine Fisheries closed the season due to cold weather. The season opened back up last Sunday and we're seeing some nice fish. I talked with a customer today that fished a good number of spots today in Core Creek with fish at every stop. He was telling me there were lots of small ones but he had 2 around 20” or so in his cooler. I also heard of some action in the Neuse River on some top water action early in the mornings. As the sun gets up anglers are hooking up with Berkley Gulp worked across the bottom.

The Redfish bite is still productive if you're in the right area. I know the Swansboro area has been good this week along with Reds being caught in Core Creek and the Newport Marshes area. Top Water Plugs, Berkley Gulp, Popping Corks, Live Mud Minnows, Dead Mullet and Redfish Magic’s are all working enticing a good bite.

It's that time of year again when the Sharks start to move in. We're starting to see some good sized ones. Some guys have been coming by the shop getting heavy-duty supplies saying they're getting broken off with big Sharks. The majority of this action is taking place around the inlet area and the shoals just inside the inlet. They get there every summer and it's some kind of fun to catch one when other things slow down. Black Tips and Bull Sharks will be the most targeted. It won't be long when they'll be huge schools of big sharks behind the trawlers just off the beach. Now that fishing can be something real crazy to see.

We're still seeing some Cobia in the area, I haven't weighed one over 40lbs that's been caught inshore over the last week. The ones we're seeing are in that 20lb range and most of them are being caught in the sound; bottom fishing with dead shad on the bottom. I weighed one in yesterday that came out of Bouge Sound and they had caught 4 more fishing right along the ICW. There were also a few caught last weekend at the Port Wall by anglers flounder fishing.

Sheepshead fishing is still good this week but we haven't weighed any large fish this week but anglers still are catching them. We have Sea Urchins and Fiddler Crabs in stock for your convenience to use as bait.

Piers / Surf:

There's still a mixed bag of fish from the Pier and Surf. Spots, Pin Fish. Croakers, Blue Fish, Flounder, Black Drum, Red Drum, Pompano, Skates and Sharks. I always tell people this time of the year who knows what you might catch. The spring runs are over and summer is here. Probably, the best to target is Flounder right along the beach in the Surf Zone with Berkley Gulp Swimming Mullet White 4” and Live Mud Minnows. They'll lay right along the beach this time of year. Spanish and Blue Fish are pretty easy to catch early in the morning and late in the afternoon on Got-Cha Plugs.

Offshore:

There's still good Dolphin fishing going on Offshore at the Big Rock area and some have been caught inside at the 14 Buoy.  Anglers have been waiting for them to get a little closer in. Also, some nice wahoo are in the mix, not huge amounts of them in the Blue Water but boats are still bringing some to the docks.

The bottom fishing has been very good this week with good numbers of Grouper just off the East Side of  Cape Lookout. One of our charter boats went bottom fishing earlier this week and left the Grouper biting being they had their limit. Trigger Fish, Sea Bass and Snappers can be caught in the mix.

The Amber Jacks are starting to get thick on the wrecks like 330, 250 and around the Atlas Tanker area. If you can find them on top busting, fishing a top water plug can be some great fishing fun. We have a good stock of big top water poppers that you'll need to hold up to those big Amber Jacks and Sharks.
