Fishing Report 07/02/2015

First off, I want to thank everyone that came out last Saturday to our Customer Appreciation Day Event; it was a blast with several informative seminars and to top it off some great food. We’re already thinking about next year’s event and we hope to see you there.  Now, it’s time to get ready for the 4th of July weekend!!!

All of the “JACKPOT CHALLENGES” have begun, remember there's no DEAD LINE TO SIGN UP for any of these events.  But don't forget there is a 3 day grace peroid when you sign up before you can weigh a fish.

Inshore:

Well to say the least, we’ve had plenty of “WIND” this week. Monday was the only day it didn’t really blow but Sunday winds were so bad the ocean was still too rough to do much fishing.

So as far as the Spanish, the only action has been behind Shackleford Banks and that’s not been the greatest.  You know it’s pretty rough when you see Sportfishing boats trolling the inside waters which has been the case over the last few days.  Now don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty of Spanish along the beaches to be caught it’s just the matter of ole mother nature.  I’m seeing it dropping back down to 10 to 15 this weekend so we’ll see if that allows boats to get back fishing the beach because the Spanish should be good and hungry.  We have been running some charters this week staying just inside the inlet picking up some nice Spanish casting small Glass Minnow Jigs.

The main fish we’ve seen this week has been Sheepshead, when we get wind more people Sheepshead fish because you can usually find a place out of the wind.  From what I’ve seen there’s a lot of fish around. I’ve been talking to anglers that fish from Sneed’s Ferry all the way up here and they’re catching good numbers of fish.  Just about every day this week we’ve been weighing in fish over the 6lbs mark plus even a few over 10lbs. I get asked a lot about where’s the best spot, well there’s really no special spot. All the bridges and all around the Port Wall have plenty of fish around it.  Just the other day, I was talking with a customer that caught some 8lb + fish off a rock pile in the sound.  So bottom line when looking for a spot right now it’s any kind of structure you can find could be holding fish. Baits are easy Live Sea Urchins and Live Fiddler Crabs will get the job done.  We do have both in-stock and can show you how to use them when you come by.

We’ve weighed a few nice Flounder this week that’s been caught around the Port area with one that went over 8lbs. Flounder fishing is another type of fishing you can do in the wind being you can hide around the Port Wall. Live Minnows and Berkley Gulp will be your best choices or you might want to try squid strips while drifting behind Shackleford Banks.

As far as everything else it’s been pretty slow, not because the fish aren’t biting just because the wind won’t allow anglers to get in the ocean where we’ve been seeing the best action.

Pier / Surf:

Again, battling the winds for the pier and surf anglers has been a bit challenging for catching fish. There’s been a few Spanish and Bluefish caught on Gotcha-plugs.  But one thing the SW winds do for the surf is dirty up the water making the Drum fishing better.  I had a customer show me one of the nicest catches of Black Drum and Red Drum I’ve seen in a long time caught earlier this week.  The best Drum action you’ll find usually find is up at Fort Macon Park.  Bait Shrimp fished on the bottom and Cut Mullet along with Live Mud Minnows will be the best choice of baits.  High tide is usually when the best action occurs during this time of year.  Just keep in mind we’re in that seasonal pattern right now so it’s not going to be a lot of any one kind of fish just a mix bag.

Offshore:

Well, wish I had more to report than plenty of wind in the Blue Water. Hopefully, next week from what we’re seeing now Monday looks like it’s going to lie down so boats can get back out.  Before the wind we were seeing plenty of Dolphin being caught along with some Black Fin Tuna.
