Fishing Report 07/06/2017

WIND, WIND and more WIND is what’s been going on, it’s been pretty tough over the last week.  Honestly; we’ve had only 3 days over the last week you could even think about getting outside the inlet and then it has still been rough.  So, in this week’s report I’m just going to hit on what we’ve been seeing and what our charters have been doing during all the wind.

Yesterday, we sent two boats out in the ocean to the bottom fishing grounds; fishing was good with limits of Grouper from over on the East Side of the Cape around the Atlas Tanker and 17 Rock areas. Both caught Sea Bass, Ring-Tails and Amber Jacks, fishing Cigar Minnows, Squid and Sardines all are working the best.

Last weekend before the winds picked up, we saw a decent King Mackerel bite over on the East Side of the Cape also; most of the fish have been on the smaller side of things but we did weigh one that was around 45lbs which is a very nice King for this time of the year.

We did see a few Dolphins being caught around the North West Places, Sea Buoy and AR 285. This is the time of the year when we’ll see them just off the beaches, not going to see any huge schools but it’s not unusual to catch a few trolling Cigar Minnows or Ballyhoo.

A few boats stayed along the beach trolling for Spanish and found plenty of action trolling #1 Planers and Bowed-Up Lures, along with Clarkspoons.  Also, pulling Mackerel Trees, Birds with Squid Rigs have been getting the job done. Just yesterday, we had reports of schooling Spanish inside the Turning Basin that some anglers were catching on the Glass Minnow Jigs from the shop.  Plus, some good schools of fish are working around Cape Lookout area.

There’s been some good Sheepshead action over the last week, all the bridges, port wall and docks along the ICW have been holding fish. Seems when you find the area that’s holding fish you catch quite a few. We had a few customers that really caught a lot of fish last week with a few 8 with some up to 10lbs. Everything we know that’s been caught has been on Live Fiddler Crabs and Live Sea Urchins which we have both in stock at the shop.

We’ve been running quite a few backwater trips in the last week because of the winds and have been finding plenty of Red Drum and a few nice Speckled Trout in the mix. Red Drum has been holding around the Haystacks and Core Creek area.  Fishing the grass edges and oyster bars on the higher tides seem to be producing the best action. Live Mud Minnows and Live Shrimp fished under Popping Corks have been producing pretty well. Also, Berkley Gulp, Top-waters and Redfish Magic’s have been doing well on the artificial side of things. The Specks have been mixed in, seems most of the best action has been on up Core Creek toward the Neuse River, early mornings has been the best for them.

I’m getting good reports of some decent Flounder action on the inside, been a lot of smaller fish but anglers are picking through them getting some nice keepers. I talked to one customer yesterday that caught 12 and had 6 keepers so that’s pretty good action. Seems the best bite has been drifting Live Mud Minnows and Gulp baits behind Shackleford Banks and the Hook at Cape Lookout on the sand bars. Also, I heard of a few being caught along the docks and bridges.  I did talk to anglers yesterday that caught quite a few at the reefs jigging Spro 2oz White Bucktails and 4” Berkley Gulp but he said it was pretty rough but the fish were there.
