It’s been another week of crazy weather with storms moving through just about everyday.  But it looks like after today, we’re going to see a break in the weather for a few days.  The weekend’s weather is looking pretty good with light winds with only a small chance of storms moving in.

 

Inshore:

The Spanish action has really picked up this week for the bigger fish. We’ve been weighing in good numbers most of the week with the biggest of them being around 6lbs.  Most of the action has been coming from AR 315 using Live Finger Mullet which we have a pretty good supply in stock.

The trolling action also picked back up last weekend and has continued this week. Anglers are having luck trolling down around the Double Tree Hotel area that seems to be where the fish are hanging out.  Also, there has been some caught trolling around the inlet area over the last few days.  Clarkspoons, Mackerel Trees, Squid Chains, Bird Rigs all have been working well.

Sheepshead fishing has been good again this week with still good numbers of fish being caught.  Bridges and the Port Wall area have been producing fish and we’re starting to see good numbers of Black Drum also in the mix with the Sheepshead. There’s been Black Drum caught pushing over 5lbs and Sheepshead over 8lbs.  Live Fiddler Crabs and Live Sea Urchins is going to be the best bait to try your luck. We have both in stock ready for action.

Flounder fishing was steady last weekend and has continued this week with still most of the action coming from the artificial reefs in the ocean. 315, 320 and 330 would all be good spots to try.  Spro 2oz Bucktails tipped with Berkley Gulp 4” Shrimp seems to be the top choice in the white colors.  Plus, a Live Mud Minnow put on the bottom on a Carolina Rig will land a Flounder too. 

I’ve been hearing there’s more action on the inside waters this week on Flounder. The guys Red Drum fishing in the marsh areas is seeing some nice flounder.  Also, I heard there’s good keeper sized fish being caught in the creeks off Core Creek and out in the Neuse River creeks.  Most of the anglers having luck in the backwaters are fishing with Live Mud Minnows and Berkley Gulp baits.  Also, there’s been a few caught along the Port Wall and around the high-rise bridges.

Speckled Trout action has still been in the Core Creek area up toward the Neuse River. When it gets hot like this in the summer, they seem to hang in the fresher water areas.  I’ve heard of some very nice fish being caught out in the Neuse River area on top waters lures. Also, the Striper fishing in the Neuse up toward the New Bern area has been great on certain days. The cloudy and light rainy days fishing has been as good as it gets.  Top Water action all day long but when the sun pops out the Speck’s seem to go deeper and not feed as much making them harder to locate.

King Mackerel is now starting to make their way to the beach. Just over the last two weeks we’ve weighed two fish over 30lbs that has come from AR315 and 320.  So, as long as the water stays clean we should see them really start to make their push right off our beaches. Also, the Shipping Channel out toward the Sea Buoy is a good place to explore for a king bite. Live Bait is going to be a good choice but also Dead Cigar Minnows fished on a Dead Bait Rig will work well too.

 

 

Piers / Surf:

Flounder fishing has been pretty good off the pier over the last few days. Had a customer get 5 keeper Flounder off the Oceanana Pier yesterday caught on Live Mud Minnows.

A few Spanish has moved back in so anglers can catch them using Got-Cha Plugs off the end of the pier. They aren’t as thick as they were a few weeks ago but there’s still some to catch along with some small Bluefish.  Early in the mornings and late in the afternoons are going to be the best times to have some action. 

As far as the bottom fishing there’s been a few caught but it’s a little slow.  Each year this time of year, the surf fishing slows down for a few weeks until we start to have some north wind cold fronts to get things moving.  We are now seeing Pompano, Sea Mullets, Blue Fish, Hog Fish, Sharks, Flounder, Redfish, Black Drum and Skates.  The bait of choice is fresh shrimp, bloodworms, squid, cut mullet and finger mullet.

 The most action we’ve seen this week is some Spinner Sharks that have moved in around the Fort Macon Rock Jetty. Anglers have been having some great action hooking up with the fish. Not many have been landed because once you hook a Spinner Shark they will put on a show jumping out the water like a tarpon. Pretty cool to catch a shark like this off the beach. We have the rigs and bait for these sharks if you want to give it a try. 

There’s been some Sheepshead coming off the rocks also on Live Fiddler Crabs fished right along the rocks as they move in and feed around the rocks.

 

 

Offshore:

We are still seeing Dolphin in good numbers but the water is getting hot so they seem to be more scattered out than a few weeks ago. Some of the boats we’ve talked to have great luck fishing in the right area catching some Dolphin then others only land a few.  There’s still some Wahoo being caught in the mix.   Most of the boats are seeing the best action on out around the Big Rock but we have heard of some action around the North West Places, 1700 Rock and around the Big Ten and Little Ten areas.  Trolling Blue Water Candy Scooters, Sea Witch Rigs, Fathom Soft Heads, C&H Jets and Islanders all have been working well rigged up with some Small and Medium Ballyhoo. We’re just around the corner of that bite really firing off as late August and September last year we saw some great Wahoo fishing.  

There was pretty good fishing for Billfish last weekend in the Barta Tournament then this weekend we have the Ducks Unlimited Tournament going on. 

The bottom fishing has been strong with anglers not having much trouble getting on some Grouper action.  Also, there’s a good mix of Black Sea Bass, Trigger Fish and Snappers on the hard bottoms to be caught.  How it’s looking right now Saturday is going to be a good day with 2 to 4ft Seas, 20 plus miles out.
