Fishing Report 08/27/2015

With the kids returning to school this week, their summer vacation is over but most of them were ready to return.  This week the weather has been really good with light winds and the weekend looks pretty good with Northeast winds Friday 10 to 15 and Saturday around 10 but a few hit or miss storms could pop up.  September is just around the corner and fall will shortly follow so fishing is only going to get better and better.

Inshore/Nearshore

The Spanish bite continues to be excellent all the way around.  Since the ocean has co-operated this week anglers have caught nice sized fish by trolling Clarkspoons on #1 planers or trolling weights plus Squid Chains, Mackerel Trees and Birds will lure a Spanish to bite.  AR 315 has been just one of the hot spots but the Inlet to the Cape continues to produce good catches too. The larger Spanish are tearing up Live Finger Mullet 4lbs and up.  We have plenty in stock for the anglers who like to fish live bait.

With the light winds casting has proven to be successful early in the mornings and during late afternoons using real small lures: Glass Minnow Jigs, Stingsilvers, Sea Striker Jig Fish, Diamond Jigs or Spec Rigs all work well. When the Spanish are in a feeding frenzy on glass minnows, casting into them can prove to be great fun but remember reel fast.

There’s been a lot of Bluefish caught this week mixed in with the Spanish in and around AR315 but Bird Shoals has large schools hanging around there using the same set up as the Spanish but what exciting fishing you can experience to hang a Bluefish on a Top-water lure, so be sure to have one with you.

Old Drum fishing has gotten even better this week in the Neuse River with many of the “BIG” boys coming into the boats. Anglers are catching numbers at night using fresh mullet; we are keeping on hand a good supply at all times plus menhaden for the bait soakers.  Also, it’s always a good idea to put out a chum bag to lure these fish to you. Anglers fishing the daylight hours are hooking up too.  Fishing artificial can be a great way to catch one of these bad boys, just look for bait schools and more than likely fish will be close by.  The Old Drum will bust through the schooling bait and you can benefit by fishing a Popping Cork tipped with a DOA Airhead or fish a DOA Deadly Combo. Just stop by the shop for your bait and we can help you by answering any questions when you’re planning a trip. We’ve wrote many citations this week with fish ranging in the upper 40lbs.  Don’t miss your chance to catch one while they’re here.

The Flounder bite has turned on and will only get better during September and early fall.  The old Port Wall seems to be a gathering place for the “Flatties” this time of the year.  They’ll stack up pretty heavy there with some nice heavy pounders.  Live bait – Mud Minnows or Finger Mullet fished on a Flounder Rig is the best for the wall.  We have both in stock in good quantities.  The bridges, docks and railroad tracks can produce good catches plus behind Shackleford Banks and the Coast Guard Station.  Close by are the reefs to fish but always remember when fishing them you can’t beat the old stand by a Spro Bucktail 2 oz normally tipped with 4” White or Glow Gulp Shrimp.

Anglers don’t seem to be Sheepshead fishing as much but the guys still going are hooking up.  We still have Sea Urchins and Fiddler Crabs in stock for these heavy fish.  Just this week we weighed one over 9 lbs. September and early fall are good months when you can still catch some very nice ones.

Now let’s get to the King Mackerel – reports this week are they’re close in meaning around 10 to 15 miles out. The Shipping Channel out to the Sea Buoy, Big Ten/Little Ten and Northwest Places are good places to slow troll with Dead Cigar Minnows on Blue Water Candy Dead-Bait Rigs, Pirate Plugs or Blue Water Candy Wedgies. Cape Lookout over to the East Side around AR285, Atlas Tanker or 1700 Rock will be the areas to scout out also. We weighed a nice 38 lb king this week and anglers have reported catching small snakes out at AR315.

This weekend is the Cape Lookout Shoot-Out so these guys will definitely bring fish to the scales.  We have a good stock of fresh caught Ribbonfish for you anglers fishing this tournament plus any tackle you need.  Good Luck to All!

Surf/Piers

The surf anglers have caught Bluefish, Spot, Pompano, a few Red and Black Drum, Sharks and a few Flounder.  The best bait is fresh shrimp, bloodworms and fresh mullet but you can also use Fish Bites and casting lures to entice a bite.

The piers are reporting Spanish and Blues plugging off the end.  The bottom fisherman have caught Flounder, Spot, Croakers and Bluefish on fresh bait shrimp, bloodworms, squid, fresh mullet and finger mullet.

Offshore

WAHOO are on the attack!  Anglers are bringing them to the scale; we have weighed fish all week.  Just yesterday, one 44lbs and one 50lbs caught at the Big Rock.  From the 90’ Drop on out to the Rock seems to be the place to fish.  The Hoo’s are hitting the darker colored Blue Water Candy Rigs in Purple/Black, Blue/Black, Red/Black rigged with Medium or Large Ballyhoo plus lures like Jag-a-Hoos, Wahoo Jets, Fathom Wahoo Bombs and Islanders or Jags in the darker colors with Small, Medium or Large Ballyhoo. We have a good supply of Ballyhoo in stock.  Charter boats have reported good catches all week with a few Dolphins in the mix.  One boat reported to us they caught good numbers of smaller sized Dolphin but they are scattered. As for the bottom fishing try the Atlas Tanker out to the 1700 Rock on the East Side or the 14 Buoy to the 90’ Drop all of these areas will produce Grouper, Trigger and Sea Bass.
