Fishing Report 09/04/2014

We made it through our last summer holiday weekend and we’re now looking forward to the “FALL” fishing to get started. But this week’s weather has been the hottest all summer. It looks like we have a pretty weekend coming our way again this week. Labor Day weekend, we had perfect weather and some great fishing from the inshore waters out to the Blue Water. We already had our first good mullet blow of the year so, the next one will really get the fish moving.

Inshore:

We saw some great Sheepshead action last weekend with some of the biggest fish we’ve seen all year coming to the scales. Actually, this time of year will produce some of the best Sheepshead fishing we’ll see all year. The Sheepshead will start to bunch up as the water cools down over the next few weeks making them easier to catch numbers in one spot. We weighed two fish that went over the 9lb mark during the holiday weekend. Still, the same areas are doing well like the Port Wall, High Rise Bridges and Docks. Live Sea Urchins and Live Fiddler Crabs are still working the best and we have both in-stock.

Flounder fishing has been good this week with us seeing some bigger fish. We weighed one in over 7lbs just this week. September has always been a big fish ”Flounder” month. The Port Wall usually produces the biggest Flounder we’ll see all year. Also, we have been seeing some caught around the bridges and in the creeks. Live Minnows will be the best choice for the flat fish on the inside waters. AR 315 is still producing good numbers along with AR285 over on the East Side. Spro 2oz Bucktails tipped with Berkley Gulp 4”Shrimp is the top choice for the ocean fish.

Spanish fishing picked back up last week when we were having the mullet blow but good numbers were caught over the holiday weekend. The smaller fish seemed to be right along the beaches and the bigger fish are being caught out in the 3 mile range in the deeper water. Anglers trolling Clarkspoons, Mackerel Trees, Bird Rigs and Squid Rigs have been seeing the most action. We’re seeing good numbers of larger fish over on the East Side and around the AR 315 reef. The majority of them are being caught on Live Finger Mullet using mini wire rigs. A few anglers got into some schooling around the inlet casting 1/2oz Jig Fish Lures and Glass Minnows Jigs. The casting with light tackle will only get better and better as the weather changes. Also, we’re seeing good numbers of Bluefish being caught while Spanish fishing.

King Mackerel fishing is some of the best we’ve seen in the last two years. They had a 50 boat King Tournament this past weekend and more than 40 boats weighed fish along with taking a fish over 50lbs to win. The East beach like AR 285, the Atlas Tanker and the 1700 Rock is producing the bigger fish plus the Beaufort Inlet fishing out through the Shipping Channel to the Sea Buoy is producing some fish too. They aren’t as big but we have weighed some in that has been over the 30lbs mark from that area. Also, the Bouge Inlet Pier area has been a good spot over the last few weeks. Live Bait has been working well but the largest fish we weighed this past weekend was caught off a “Dead Cigar Minnow fished on a Blue Water Candy Dead Bait Rig”. This time of year that combo will get the job done and you don’t have to worry about searching or catching Live Bait.

The Old Drum fishing seems to have picked up this week with reports of some good numbers being caught on the Popping Cork Rig. The DOA Airheads are a very good choice and we have them rigged and ready to fish in the shop. The anglers using “Dead Menhaden or Mullet” on the bottom at night have been doing the best as far as numbers of fish. It’s been a few weeks now since we’ve had any crazy rain fall amounts so the fish seem to be moving in better now. I heard of a few that were caught at the mouth Adams Creek this week on Popping Corks. We are getting to the peak of the Old Drum season as next week we’re going to have a full moon and that will turn the bite on because the full moon gets the fish very active.

There’s still good numbers of smaller fish in the marsh areas to be caught. We saw some real nice fish that were caught in the Core Creek area yesterday.

The 7th Annual Speckled Trout Challenge has started now, we just need some cooler weather to get them really turned on. We’re already seeing some in the Neuse River being caught and anglers are catching a few on top water lures fishing for Red Fish in the marsh areas. We had reports of a few being caught at Radio Island plus the Oceanana Pier.

September Wid Card Weight: 2.76lbs

There’s been a lot of calls about the Sea Mullets and Spots. The guy that makes the new custom Speck Rigs that we carry and worked so good this spring called me this week and said it’s getting ready to happen. He went out on Monday and caught around 17 nice ones but went back the next day and caught none. He’s saying within the next few weeks the Sea Mullets are going to really start moving in.

As far as Spots, I made a few calls up north of us and they’re seeing a good run in Virginia right now so it won’t be long before they’ll be coming through our area. I’m thinking by mid to the end of the month we’ll see the run in our area.

Piers / Surf:

Well, it got hot again this week which slowed the fishing some along the beach. Last week, when we had the north winds and mullet pouring out of the inlet fishing was really getting good. We were starting to see a good Red Drum bite, Blue Fish going crazy and some Spanish right along the beach. We are still seeing some Bluefish and Spanish action this week off the piers. A few Sea Mullets and Pompano are being caught along the Surf Zone. We’re so close for the Surf Zone to bust wide open with the best fishing we’ll see all year. We saw a few Flounder caught this week from the Surf Zone on Live Minnows and Gulp Swimming Mullets. Crazy enough, there’s been some Speckled Trout caught off the Pier using Live Shrimp.

Offshore:

Wahoo fishing is getting better and better each week. We weighed quite a few over the 30lb range and one that topped over the 70lb mark last weekend. Most of the fish are coming from the Big Rock area but the biggest we weighed coming from the 1700 Rock area. Blue Water Candy Wahoo Jags, Wahoo Chains and Wahoo Bombs all are working great. Also, a new lure we picked up from Fathom Offshore is their Wahoo Chain and it’s been pretty hot. The lures that need bait on them – Medium Ballyhoo – has been working the best. I heard of few Dolphin being caught but not very many, it’s mostly going to be Wahoo for the rest of the season.

The bottom fishing has been pretty good with good numbers of Grouper being caught from the 1700 Rock out to the ledges. Bottom fishing is producing Sea Bass, Trigger Fish, Snappers and Amber Jacks. The anglers are fishing with Cigar Minnows, Sardines, Mackerel, Squid Wings plus the Bare Foot Decoy Jigs and the Blue Water Candy Roscoe Jigs.
