Fishing Report 09/11/2014

It looks like we're going to see our first signs of Fall next week with a good cold front, temperatures in the low 80’s and a few days even forecasted in the high 70’s. Along with this cooler weather on the way, we're going to see our 2nd mullet blow of the year. We can say the last two weeks was some of the hottest we've seen all summer so we're ready for a cool down. The majority of fishermen will agree the “FALL ACTION” is the best fishing of the year. 

 

Inshore: 

Spanish fishing has really picked up over the last few days with some nice fish being caught around the inlet area. Also, I heard of some nice fish caught yesterday around the gun mounts up at Cape Lookout. Right now, it seems if you find the bait you're going to find feeding Spanish. Casting small 1/2oz and 3/4oz Jig Fish Lures along with Glass Minnows Jigs will get you action while they're feeding on top. Along with casting to schools of feeding fish trolling up and down the beaches will produce fish using Clarkspoons. Also, you're going to catch Albacore, Bluefish and we've had some Jacks in the mix. 

King Mackerel fishing has been decent over the last week, not any huge amounts of fish being caught but several have been brough to the scales. Anglers are having luck in the Inlet out through the Shipping Channel area. Also, over on the East Side 285, 1700 and the Atlas Tanker area all would be choices to look. From what we've seen, the guys fishing the Blue Water Candy Dead Bait Rigs are having good luck rigged up with a Dead Cigar Minnow. I talked with a customer that was here fishing during the first of the week that was having good action with the same set up at AR 315. 

Flounder fishing has been good this week plus last week. It seems each day we're weighing in fish over the 5lbs mark. Most all of the bigger fish we've weighed are being caught around the State Port area. There's very good action around the Port when the finger mullet is getting thick in that area and the Flounder know it. Live Minnows fished on the bottom around the structure will be the best bait.

 

The reefs are still producing Flounder and it should really pick up now as the water starts to cool. Spro White 2oz Bucktails tipped with Berkley Gulp 4” Shrimp is the best lure along with Live Minnows if you choose live bait. 

This week I've heard of the first signs of Sea Mullets with some being caught in the Inlet along with some nice Gray Trout. The ones that have been caught were caught on the custom Spec Rigs we started carrying this past Spring. Tipping these with bait shrimp or fishbites will work the best. If we get the cooler weather like they're calling for we should really begin seeing their run down from the north. I haven't heard of any Spots yet but how things are going it could be very soon. 

Sheepshead are still being caught in the area. This is one of the best times of the year to fish for them because most anglers who were fishing for them switch gears toward different kinds of fish. The Port Wall area and the Hi-Rise Bridges both will be good places to fish. Live Fiddler Crabs and Live Sea Urchins is still the best choice for bait. We do still have both in stock ready for action. 

Since, the Speckled Trout Challenge has started we're starting to see some trout being caught. I had a customer come by today with a limit of 16-inch trout he had caught fishing around the Haystacks.  Next week, the water should really cool down and that will help get them on the move. I've already heard of some bigger fish being caught in the Neuse River.

The Old Drum fishing in the river so far has been hit or miss. We've had so much rain and fresh water coming down the river this summer it's keeping the salt levels down. When the salt levels are down like they are the bait fish just don't get thick like it should be right now which is making the Popping Cork fishing tough. There's only been certain areas that have been holding bait and fish.

 

The bait guys have been doing pretty well at night but again it’s been hard to find fresh mullet to even fish with. Last weekend, we got our hands on some fresh shad that we kept on ice that worked good. Hopefully, this weekend we'll have one or the other to use for bait.

 

As for the small Redfish, that bite has been steady with Topwaters in the Marsh areas. From what we've been seeing most all of the creeks and flats are holding some fish. It’s just a matter of getting out and looking. We've had some high tides this week, so we've even seen some in the grass tailing.

Piers / Surf: 

We are starting to see some action… just over the last few days anglers have been catching some Spanish and Bluefish by plugging plugs off the end of the pier early in the morning. Gotcha Plugs, Tasmania and Pole Kat Lures all will work great when plugging.

 

The pier and the surf anglers are both reporting catching some Red Drum. We had a customer catch one that was over 30lbs this week fishing the sound side at Fort Macon on cut mullet. I know the Oceanana Pier has seen some also in the slot size and over. The Red Drum fishing is only going to get better with this cold front on the way along with the north winds. When the mullet start to run down the beaches again the drum won't be far behind. 

 

Surf and pier anglers are catching a few more Sea Mullets and Spots along with some nice Pompano. If you like to fish in the surf or off the pier this is the time – now until late November will be the best fishing we'll see all year.

Offshore: 

Wahoo action is beginning to fire-up with good catches coming to the docks. Most of the action seems to be out around the Big Rock area. Blue Water Candy Wahoo Chains, Blue Water Candy Jag A Hoo’s, Jags and Fathom Wahoo Chains are all working very well. There is still a few Dolphin being caught but most everyone has switch over to fishing for Hoo’s now.

 

The bottom fishing has been pretty good with Groupers, Snappers, Hog Fish, Grunts, AJ’s, along with huge sharks. The East Side beach has been a pretty good area to fish along with out around the 14 Buoy. Cigar Minnows, Sardines, Mackerel, Squid and Squid Wings all have been good choices of bait. The Barefoot Jigs have been producing very well over the last few weeks along with guys jigging Blue Water Candy Roscoe Jigs.

 

It looks like we might have some showers this weekend coming through but they're saying the winds are going to be light with good seas to fish.
