Fishing Report 09/24/2015

Inshore / Nearshore:

Spanish fishing has been good over the last week, good numbers of fish in the same areas: Inlet, Shipping Channel, Cape Lookout Shoals and along the beaches for anglers trolling. Clarkspoons, Mackerel Trees, Drone Spoons and Squid Chains all are working well. The last few days has been challenging with the wind howling, Monday, we saw a good bite before the wind picked up.

Casting jigs on light tackle is still good around the Inlet and up at Cape Lookout, the wind just needs to lay down a bit to get back on the schools of fish. Jig Fish Lures, Glass Minnows Jigs and the new Heavy Jigs have been working great. We just got the Heavy Jigs back in-stock for the anglers that were looking for them. So far, they are working great with the small size and the extra weight allowing you to cast them a good distance.

We did see a pretty good bite last Sunday on the larger Spanish at AR315 and AR285 with Live Finger Mullet but since Monday it’s been hard to get out to the reefs and fish. Also, in the mix; we're starting to see False Albacore, Jacks and plenty of Bluefish in the same areas along the beaches where you'll find the Spanish.

Unfortunately, we haven't seen that much King Mackerel action during this week, with all the mullet that's coming out of the inlets with this North East blow I can't imagine there's not fish pushing in to take advantage of the bait. You can still fish along the beach at the Dead Tree Hole and up toward the Cape along the beach both wouldn't be that bad how the wind is blowing.

Old Drum fishing has slowed down some this week but again dealing with wind is keeping anglers off the river. I'm sure this low pressure and North East wind is going to start pushing the fish back toward the ocean, so rule of thumb; we have the next two week to catch them. We still have fresh mullet in-stock and plenty of DOA Airheads, along with Popping Corks ready for action. The Cedar Island area will probably pick back up with Old Drum action as the fish  start making their way back toward the inlets.

Anglers are catching some pretty Gray Trout in the Inlet back toward the Turning Basin. Tim, from the shop got on them real good over at the AB Bridge on Monday, he was out tagging for the Tagging Program. He was telling me this year, we have a nicer class of fish that has shown up. I know some has been caught during the last week in the Inlet area that have weighed over 4lbs. Sam, that makes our custom spec-rigs had some great action with his rigs tipped with Bait Shrimp in the Turning Basin last weekend. Two at a time action is pretty fun when the fish are nice sized fish.

I've heard of a few small Speckled Trout starting to move in so, hopefully; that’s a sign of some Speckled Trout action in the near future. You still have plenty of time to sign up for our Speckled Trout Challenge here at the shop or call and we'll handle your sign-up.

Still waiting on the Sea Mullets and Spots to push in, we did see a few last week but no big numbers yet. I did receive a report the North River area has some nice yellow bellies being caught but it's just not quiet time for our normal areas but we're right on the verge of the fall run. It just might be this week who knows; just get out and explore the Turning Basin area and Beaufort Draw Bridge back through Gallant's Channel all of these are the best spots to look. Bloodworms, Fishbites and Bait Shrimp will be the best choices for bait fished on a bottom rig or spec rig.

Flounder fishing still remains good around the Port Wall area, with most of the action by fishing Live Finger Mullet. There's not a lot of fish being caught but we're seeing some good quality of fish come off the wall. For numbers, fish AR 315 has been the better area with Live Finger Mullet and Spro 2oz Bucktails tipped with 4″ Gulp Shrimp both being the ticket for the flatties in the ocean.

Piers / Surf:

We were seeing some good Spanish and Bluefish action until this low pressure system hanging off the coast got things churned up. Anglers are still catching a few but it's been slow over the last few days. There's plenty of bait in the water so, there should be some fish to catch. I have heard of good numbers of Pompano this week from the piers and surf anglers. Also, seen a few runs of Sea Mullets and Spots along the Surf Zone, seems mostly the best action has been after dark. Most anglers have been throwing Got-Cha Plugs and fishing fresh mullet or bait shrimp on the bottom.

Offshore:

Not that much to report because the winds have kept the offshore boats tied up to the docks over the last week. We did weigh in a few nice Wahoo last weekend but they came from the guys King Mackerel fishing over on the East Side. Last week, we saw some good action on the Hoo’s from the Big Rock back down toward the Swansboro Hole. So, the fish are here, it’s Wahoo Season. All we can do is wait for the ocean to calm down so you Wahoo anglers can make it back out to the fishing grounds. Looks like next week, the weather's going to improve allowing boats to get back out.
