Fishing Report 09/25/2014

Well, we're getting some fall weather quick this year. I don’t remember when we've had this much “North Wind” before October, along with all the rain. It looks like we're going to get a break for this weekend inshore. The forecast is calling for light north winds including some sun for the weekend.

Inshore:

There's still some great Spanish action along the beach and around the inlet area. It's been “hit or miss” from day to day with all the weather we've been having. But when they're feeding it's lights out; all you want, with fish everywhere busting bait. I had a few customers that trolled the beach earlier this week with Clarkspoons and Planers that caught their limit without any problem.

As far as casting lures, the Jig Fish Lures in the 1/2oz and 3/4oz size have been hard to beat for the feeding fish. There seems to be a better bite at the higher tides around the inlet areas and along the beach. Just because you might not see them feeding in the inlet doesn't mean their not out there. I know there's been some good action up around Cape Lookout and good action down around the Oceanana Pier down to the DoubleTree Pier. Along, with the Spanish you're going to catch some Bluefish and the ones we've been seeing are nice sized and fun to catch.

If you like to catch Albacore – Now's the Time. Over the last few weeks, we've had some of the best action we've seen the last few years. I know last Saturday afternoon, down around the DoubleTree Pier area there was all the fish you wanted to catch. Some customers that went out early this week before the wind picked up caught 15 or so in just a few hours. Just scout out the birds and you'll find the fish, just keep your eyes on the lookout when you clear the inlet area.

The same lures as the Spanish will work fine for casting to them. Just remember you have to keep it small, if you go over a 3/4oz you're getting to big. Even if the fish are feeding like crazy on top, if you have too big of a lure they won't hit it making your fishing very frustrating.

The King Mackerel bite has been hit or miss over the last few weeks with all the wind and rain. I'm sure their still out there and if there's a break in the weather, GO. Just last Sunday, we weighed one that was caught in the Turning Basin that close in that weighed right at 40lbs then another last week that was caught of the beach at Fort Macon. So there are a few fish working that area feeding on all teh mullets coming out of the backwaters. I am sure there are some fish over on the East Side but with all teh North East Winds its kept anglers from fishing that area. Dead Cigar Minnows fished on a Dead Bait Rig would be a great choice to pull for some King Mackerel action.

There's been some good reports on Spots being caught, but from what we've seen there hasn't been that many anglers fishing for them yet. We have a few customers that's been fishing the Beaufort Draw Bridge area at night doing pretty good. The most I've heard of is catches up to 70 or so. Also, a place that has been doing well is the Beaufort Public Pier along the Beaufort High-Rise Bridge. It's not known as a great spot for Spots but over the past week anglers are having pretty good luck there. Live Bloodworms, Fishbites Bloodworms or Fishbites Shrimp are working the best fished on bottom rigs near or on the bottom.

Sea Mullets haven't been wide open yet but we've seen some nice catches from the inlet area on Spec-Rigs tipped with Bait Shrimp or Fishbites Shrimp. In the same areas there's plenty of Gray Trout to be caught off the bottom or around the bridges jigging Stingsilvers.

There's been a few Flounder weighed in this week that's been caught around the Coast Guard Station and in some of the backwater creeks on Live Minnows. It’s that time for the big ones to be around the Port Wall area. There's not been a lot of fishing in that area this week, so we haven't heard of many being caught around there. Last weekend, the artificial reefs were producing some fish on Spro 2oz Bucktails tipped with Berkley Gulp 4” White Shrimp.

I can report that we are beginning to see some good Speckled Trout action in the area. Last weekend, we saw some great limits of trout and some good sized ones at that. The majority of what we've seen so far is the best action has been in the Neuse River Creeks. But, I did weigh a few nice fish that were caught in the Core Creek area this week. Mirrolure 17MR, Soft Dines and Vudu Shrimp have been working good along with some great Topwater action using either a Heddon Spook Jr or a Rapala Skitter Walk.

We've been seeing good fish all summer long with anglers Redfishing in the marsh water areas with Topwaters. So, once the temperature cools down just a little these fish will really start to bunch up making them easier to catch. Live Shrimp hasn't been a big factor yet since there's still tons of Pinfish around to eat them almost immediately. We do have them in-stock if you want to give them a try. But in the next few weeks, we should see that change, as they'll start to move out of the backwater areas.

I'm hearing of some pretty good Redfishing going on in the marsh areas. If you can't make it, it'll be aired live on www.carolinaredfishseries.com starting around 3:00 pm. The weather looks like it’s going to be pretty good. So,we should see some heavy weights come to the scales. Piers / Surf:

The piers are seeing some of the best Spanish action they've seen all year. Now, it’s not just walking out there and catching all you want. It's pier fishing, the fish come through in schools. So, the guys spending time out there are really doing well on nice fish. Anglers are casting Gotcha-plugs, Kastmasters and Jig Fish Lures any of these will put fish in your cooler.

Also, you're going to see some nice schools of Bluefish come through that can be caught on the same plugs. I know last Saturday, the Albacore came close enough to the pier that anglers were hooking up on them. Also, there's been some nice schools of Red Drum in the Surf Zone being caught and “Fresh Mullet” is the hot ticket for catching them.

I heard there was a real good Spot bite the other night for a few hours along with a few Sea Mullets. Fishing with Bloodworms, Bait Shrimp and Fishbites on the bottom will allow you to hook-up when they come down the beach.

We have weighed some nice Flounder in the last few days from the Fort Macon Park area that were caught on Live Minnows.

For all of you Surf anglers, we will have plenty of FRESH MULLET for you this weekend.

Next weekend, is the Coastal Angler Magazine Surf Fishing Tournament hosted by Chasin Tails Outdoors. You can sign up here at the shop. It’s going to be a fun event for the whole family, so come join the fun. We have all the details are rules, give us a call if you have any questions.  The tournament area covers from Fort Macon to Bouge Inlet.

Offshore:

Unfortunately, there's not much to report Offshore this past week because the weather has kept most of the boats tied to the dock. Last, we heard was The Big Rock down toward the Swansboro Hole was the place to fish for some Wahoo action. It kind of stinks because we are getting toward the peak of the best Wahoo fishing of the year, so everyone knows it's great fishing right now but the wind has to give us a break.

When the weather breaks, we have plenty of Medium Ballyhoo and we just got in some great looking Selects for the Wahoo action.
