Fishing Report 10/01/2015

Well, unfortunately this Fishing Report is rain and more rain, We battled it all last weekend on into the first of the week; now again this weekend. The last up-date shows Hurricane Joaquin staying a few hundred miles offshore, so let’s hope and pray that stays true because we sure don’t need that to deal with. But either way it looks like we are going to have another rainy weekend.

As far as the fishing goes, I don’t have a lot to report because of all the weather issues we've been dealing with along the coast. But a few anglers have been trying their luck. I've been getting a lot of calls about how messed up the water is from the rain. What we have seen so far, things are pretty normal looking with just some dirty water coming down the rivers. As far as the ocean, it has looked pretty good over the last few days. One thing for sure there's still plenty of bait coming down the beaches, so that means the fish shouldn't go anywhere.

We have seen plenty of Spanish and Bluefish caught this week around the Inlet and up at Cape Lookout Shoals. Anglers casting small jigs and trolling Clarkspoons have been landing good catches. Also, there was a good Albacore bite around the Cape yesterday with anglers taking advantage of the warm weather window finding great numbers of schooling fish.

There's been good numbers of Gray Trout in the Turning Basin being caught on Spec-Rigs tipped with Bait Shrimp or jigging Stingsilvers. Nick, from the shop did make it to AR 315 and 320 yesterday and caught a few Flounder jigging Spro Bucktails tipped with 4” Berkley Gulp Shrimp.

The few surf anglers that's been fishing in this weather has been doing pretty well. I've had reports of good numbers of Pompano being caught along with a few Spots, Red Drum, Black Drum and Sea Mullets along the beaches. Also, Bluefish and Spanish have been running the beach chasing finger mullet.. I even heard last week when we had the strong North East winds even some Speckled Trout were caught in the surf.

Anglers fishing the Oceanana Pier this week have caught numerous nice size Spanish and Bluefish plugging off the end using Gotcha Plugs and the new heavy weight jig we have in stock.  Honestly, they have been flying off the shelf with real good reports coming back in.

So, I feel like our fall fishing in the surf and on the piers is right on the verge of busting loose, we just need the weather to give us a break so, anglers can get out and enjoy the best time of the year to fish.

It feels kind of strange not having that much to report but the fact is we can't control old mother nature. But on the brighter side of things after this hurricane passes; so far, next week's weather is looking pretty good with sunny skies, cooler temperatures and less rain.
