Fishing Report 10/08/2015

What a week this has been but SUNNY skies have finally returned with light winds.  The water clarity in the sound, creeks and rivers is a bit murky to say the least.  The next two days are forecasted to be absolutely beautiful “FALL” days – temps in the 70’s plus light, light winds.

We were very fortunate that Hurricane Joaquin didn’t make landfall anywhere on the East Coast but with the fronts that held it offshore torrential rainfall and flooding occurred. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and businesses in South Carolina that suffered loss as they slowly rebound.

Inshore/Nearshore

Fall fishing is here, there was even fish caught last weekend in the rain and wind, one of our customers caught a mixed bag: Gray Trout, Flounder, Hogfish and Spot coming back in Sunday for more bait.

This week with improving skies and the water trying to clear up some; we still dealt with high tides and wind the first of the week but anglers have ventured out over the last few days catching fish.

Spots have arrived!! The pier at the Beaufort Hi-Rise Bridge is producing good size Spots plus Hogfish and Puffers. We’ve had very good reports coming in from pier fisherman and boat anglers that the Yellow Bellies are here.  The areas from the pier through the Turning Basin around to the Beaufort Drawbridge down Gallant’s Channel will be the best places to fish. Fresh live Bloodworms and fresh Shrimp will be the ticket in filling your cooler but Fish bites is great artificial bait too. We have all baits for the Spots in stock with fresh arriving daily.

Gray Trout, Hogfish, Puffers, Croakers, Blue Fish and Sea Mullet all will be in the Turning Basin, around the Railroad Tracks, back to the Coast Guard Station and out the Inlet.  Jigging a Sting-silver will produce a bite from the Gray’s, the Blue’s will hit any shiny casting jig and all the others fresh Bait Shrimp or Bloodworms will be the choice of bait.

False Albacore was busting schools of minnows in the Inlet just yesterday, so you anglers that like to fish for them had better take advantage of some real fun casting small jigs like Kastmasters, Jig-fish Lures, P-Line Jigs, Hopkins or Epoxy Jigs.  The Number #1 key is smaller the better. One customer reported this morning “what a blast” he had yesterday; going again today.

Will the Spanish still be here? Report just in – YES, they are! We heard this morning that a few were caught yesterday and already this morning right off the beach, Spanish and Blues. You may have to fish a little deeper until the water clears up some trolling #1 Planers or Trolling Weights with Clarkspoons or Mackerel Trees may produce more fish. We’re in hopes that the water will clear up fast and you can hang into some 3 to 4 pounders.  We have live Finger Mullet for any anglers that want to live bait on top.

Flounder – there should still be some stacked on the Port Wall or around the Bridges. Live bait fishing with Mud Minnows or Finger Mullet will entice a bite from these guys. If you venture out to the wrecks like AR 315 or 320 same old story Spro Bucktail 2oz tipped with Gulp 4” Shrimp will get you a bite on the Flatties.

Speckled Trout – a good report came in this morning from one of our customers that they limited out yesterday on Speck’s; going back this morning fishing up the ICW in the creeks using live Shrimp.  That’s a very good sign!!  Remember to sign up for our Speckled Trout Challenge (no deadline to sign-up) September 1-January 3rd.

Kings – The best areas to fish for Kings is the East Side of the Cape, 285, 1700 Rock, 30 Minute Rock and the Atlas Tanker. Trolling with a Dead Cigar Minnow on a Blue Water Candy Dead Bait Rig or a Pirate Plug or a live bait rig with Menhaden and Blue Fish will entice a bite. Ribbonfish with a Blue Water Candy Ribbonfish Rig is a great way to fish; you’ll catch bigger Kings on Ribbonfish.  We have pretty Ribbonfish in stock and Cigar Minnows along with all the rigs you will need.

The Cape Lookout Shootout qualifying event for the SKA Championship is this weekend. Good Luck to these anglers!

Piers/Surf

The Oceanana Pier reported this morning a little slow fishing with Spots and Mullet being caught using fresh Shrimp, Bloodworms and Fish bites but with the water clearer this morning anglers are beginning to plug again for Spanish and Blues so let’s keep our fingers crossed the bite will turn on.

The Bogue Pier reported yesterday it was on fire with Blue Fish on every cast.  Plus good size Spots, Pompano, Croakers and Sea Mullets for the bottom fisherman are being caught.

The Surf is doing pretty good with Pompano, Sea Mullet, Bluefish, Flounder, Black Drum and Sharks. The best baits will be fresh Shrimp, fresh Mullet, Bloodworms, Mud Minnows and artificial Fish bites.  A casting jig is always good to have for the Blue Fish to attack.

The big catch this week has been at Fort Macon Park with “HUGE RED DRUM” being caught using a Drum Rig with fresh Finger Mullet or cut Mullet.  Don’t miss your chance to hook into one of these monsters while they’re in the Surf. Plus anglers are catching nice Flounder around the rocks and around the Coast Guard Station fishing with Mud Minnows.

Offshore

Unfortunately, most of the boats have been anchored at the docks this week. We expect plenty of the big boats will be heading out today with this beautiful weather. There should be some Wahoo, Kings, Dolphin coming to the scales this afternoon.  We have plenty of Ballyhoo in stock with all the lures plus Cigar Minnows for you offshore anglers.  Fish anywhere from the 14 Buoy to the 90’ Drop out to the Big Rock.

Bottom fishing for Grouper, Black Sea Bass, Triggerfish, Snapper, Ringtails and Amberjacks fish the 305, 240, 210, Big Ten/Little Ten and Northwest Places.  Bottom fishing on the East Side of the Cape fish 1700 Rock, Atlas Tanker and the Chicken Rock.  Best bait Dead Cigar Minnows, Live Menhaden on the bottom and Squid Wings.
