Fishing Report 10/10/2014

Inshore:

We're having one of the best “King Mackerel” bites that we've seen in the past few years. If you like to catch them, now's the time. All last weekend and all through this week, Kings have been weighed on our scales. Also, the action is wide spread so it’s not just one spot producing all the fish. We're seeing fish from Bouge Inlet Pier all the way up to Ocracoke. Beaufort Inlet, Dead Tree Hole and the Shipping Channel all have been pretty good spots this week. Live Bait and Dead Cigar Minnows on Dead Bait Rigs are working the best on the Kings.

Spanish fishing is still very good in our area with fish all up and down the beach with larger fish all around the AR Reefs. But anglers are catching plenty of 3lb range fish casting small lures like Jig Fish, P-Line Glass Minnows and Spec-Rigs. Really, they're hitting anything that is small.  If you get too big with the lure your chances will go down in getting good action. Anglers are still catching great numbers trolling Clarkspoons on planers and trolling weights. Just look for the birds working the water then you shouldn't have any problems filling your coolers up with Spanish.

Albacore fishing is just about as good as it gets right now. Huge schools are feeding on Glass Minnows and Menhaden balls. Again, look for the birds and you'll find the action up and down the beach. Also, keep an eye out for Cobia in the bait balls that the Albacore are feeding on. Just over the last two days, we have weighed in some Cobia being caught from anglers fishing for Albacore.

I've been getting a lot of calls about “SPOT FISHING” and “YES” they are here! It's time to fish for them right now because they'll be moving on in a few weeks. The Turning Basin and the Beaufort Draw Bridge Channel is the best places to fish. This week and last weekend anglers weren't having any problem filling up coolers with Spot to fill the freezer for the winter. Live Bloodworms, Fish Bite Shrimp and Fish Bite Bloodworms all are working the best

Sea Mullets arrived in better quanitity this week coming into the Turning Basin and the Inlet area with anglers catching good numbers. Spec-Rigs tipped with Bait Shrimp will be the best bait for them. Also, anglers are catching plenty of very nice sized Gray Trout in the mix with the mullet on the bottom. I know Tim from the shop has been catching some really nice sized Gray Trout around the Railroad Tracks and the Beaufort Bridge this week.

Speckled Trout fishing is getting better and better with each day, the best action still seems to be in the Neuse River and the Core Creek area. I did hear a pretty good Speckled Trout report last weekend with them being in the Haystacks. Just in the last few days, I know some were caught at the Radio Island Rock Jetty. So, things are starting to happen with them cause they're beginning to bunch up.

There's been some nice Redfish caught this week of all places in the Turning Basin area. On the Sand Bags and along the Railroad Tracks both have been holding fish. Tim from the shop caught all he wanted of upper and over slot fish at the tracks just a few days ago using Live Minnows fishing on the bottom. Another crazy thing, we've seen this week is some huge schools of Old Drum along the beach. Just the other day, I know up around the Cape Lookout area, it’s been just a blitz of Red Drum feeding on top and hitting everything you'd cast to them.

Piers / Surf:

There's still some great Spanish action off the piers along with Bluefish and Albacore. It's pretty good fishing when the anglers pugging off the piers are catching all the Albacore they want. Even some of the anglers throwing from the beach are hooking up when the schools get close enough.  Anglers are catching good numbers of Spot off the pier and right along the Surf Zone on Live Bloodworms and Fishbites. We're starting to see some Black Drum along the beach and right beside the piers. Bait Shrimp fished on the bottom is working well for them. There's not a lot of Red Drum yet but there's been a few caught this week along the beach and at the Fort Macon Rock Jetty. Sea Mullet and Pompano is also being caught by the bottom-fishing anglers.

Offshore:

The Wahoo fishing has been the best we've seen all year over the last few weeks. We weighed the largest one yet that topped the scales at 95lbs. Plus, we weighed a lot last weekend in the 40 to 60lb range too. What we're hearing from anglers, the 1700 Rock out to the Big Rock and then back down toward the Swansboro Hole is the best spots to find the Hoo’s. Boats are also catching some Black Fin Tuna in the mix with a stray Dolphin or two.

It looks like the weather is going to hold out for boats to get out this weekend, so we should have lots of fish hitting the scales and docks.
